AAUP cites three main objectives
By Pat Griendling
The American Association
of University Professors (AAUP)
is busy right now with three main
objectives. Dr. Terrill Mayes
cited these:
1. “Salary schedule for
University employees. A step
system similar to other university
systems.
2. “We are working on
modifying the state retirement
plan. The entire cost should be
paid by the University and not
partly by the faculty. Change in
the manner in which the
retirement is taken from summer
salaries.
3. “We would like some
input in the selection of people,
including department chairman.
Trying to gain effective voice in
the administrative office up to
Chancellor. We want voice in
selection and retention.
“With, this salary schedule
we would be insured each year a
salary increase, said Mayes,
“University personnel don’t have
a minimum salary for each rank.
A low salary is paid to parttime
people. Some employees have
had the same salary in last ten
years. No one’s doing anything.”
“In this paper we outline a
salary system for the UNCC
faculty which incorporates step
increases, merit increases and
cost of living adjustments. The
need for such a system has been
amply demonstrated by the
economic events of the past few
years. We believe that the
following proposal is reasonable
and within reach of the state.
“This salary schedule
incorporates both step increases
and the possibility of merit
increases. The merit levels for
each rank are shown by the lines
headed by Roman numerals. A
faculty member would negogiate
his merit level when hired, and
his salary would then move
horizontally along that line.
Merit would be rewarded by a
jump in his merit level. For
example, a Level II assistant
professor in his second year
would receive $14,916. He
would normally receive $15,624
the next year, whereas a jump in
merit level would increase that to
$16, 392. Promotion should
carry a minimum two-step
increase, e.g., a sixth year Level II
assistant professor would jump
to $19,836 upon promotion. A
separate fund should be
budgeted for this purpose.
Beyond the sixth year salary
increments should be based on
merit and distinguished service.
Cost of Living Adjustment
Salaries of all faculty
members should be adjusted
semi-annually on the basis of the
Consumer Price Index for the
state of North Carolina. This
adjustment would enable a
faculty member to maintain his
standard of living in the face of
inflation, something which he
has fallen far short of in the past.
Merit Increases
There should be an annual
merit pool equal to three per cent
of the instructional budget.
These funds are to be distributed
on the basis of demonstrated
merit, and may be used to move
faculty members to higher levels
within their rank.
Maix Street is new Media Board Chairman
By Michael Evans
Max Street, editor of
Sanskrit for the coming year,
was elected as Chairman of the
Student Media Board (SMB) for
the 1977/78 year at the Board’s
April 5 meeting. “This position
requires a working relationship
with several individuals
responsible for managing a
considerable portion of student
fees,” said Street.
Brad Rich, co-editor of the
Carolina Journal , was selected
as Vice Chairman of Board, a
position he held during the
latter portion of the 1976/77
school year. Street and Rich
were also chosen to represent
the SMB on the Student Fees
Commission. Alice Beck, an
at-large member of the SMB,
was selected to serve on the
University Center Advisory
Committee representing the
Board.
Rich said, “L would like to
see the SMB become more
impartial in its dealings. I would
like to see members of the
Board express more concern for
the media as a whole than for
their particular media. The time
has passed for petty jealousies
and grievances.”
Asked what he would
propose in the way of changes,
Rich said, “I’d like to see
sometime in the next year, the
Board establish some kind of
photography pool. Also, I

would like to see the Board
become more involved in
promoting the various activities
sponsored by other
organizations on campus. I feel
that we have only scratched the
surface of our potential benefits
to the University as a whole.”
Street expressed a desire for
unity on the Board, and added,
“Through a group effort, I feel
the individuals now working in
the media can provide a very
enjoyable year for the students
at UNCC.”
Jeff Arrowood, recently
elected chairman of the Student
Broadcasting Association, gave
hope for educational radio
saying, “the present deadline for
going on the air with the FM
station is April 18, 1977. The
projected hours are from 4:00
to 8:00 pm each afternoon.”
Susan Sluss, representing
the Sanskrit magazine at the
meeting said their second issue
of the year was out and
presently being distributed on
campus.
The newspaper report,
provided by Rich, included
some personnel changes for the
coming year. Rich said,
“Michael Evans has resigned as
head typesetter and has been
replaced by Doug Lerner. Evans
has also resigned as Business
Manager, effective June 30.
Lerner will replace him in this
position as well. Lerner will not
have editorial powers on the
newspaper.
“Currently we are working
on our budget for next year. We
are trying to stay at or near last
year’s budget, and hope that the
rest of the SMB will adhere to
this spirit.”
In other business, the Board
changed a line item regarding
dark room monies, allowing all
remaining money in the account
(under $100.00) to be given as

had served as dark room
heads during the past year..
