The Student Newspaper of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte Volume XIV, Number 28 Charlotte, North Carolina February 22, 1979 Student body elections plans underway for spring By Kathy Espin The Student Legislature approved the appointment of a co-chairperson of the Elections and Publicity Com mittee. Tom Chumley, chair of the commit tee, announced Cathy Allred would be his new co-chair. The committee will also include two or three other people along with the Nuggets, who will help run the stu dent elections scheduled for March 27-28 and a vote on a constitutional referendum to be held on March 5-6. Chumley said he sees no conflict of interest in the Nuggets working the elections even though Kim Burns, a candidate for student body president, is president of the Nuggets. “We have had candidates who were con nected with the Nuggets before and we have never had any problems," Chumley said, "besides, Cathy and I will probably be at one or the other polling places at all times during the elections.” Polling places for the elections will be in the dorm cafeteria and in the Cone University Center. Dorm students will vote in the Residence Hall Cafeteria from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and commuters and campus apart ment students will vote in the Cone University Center from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Chumley said he is planning to have three voting machines at each location. “I would like to get at least 15 per cent of the student body to vote this year,” Chumley said. "The usual tur nout is less than 12 percent. We have a higher percentage (of students voting) than at Carolina (UNC-Chapel Hill). It's not really a matter of life and death to vote around here. This is the 1970s, the age of every man for himself, but 1 will do everything possible to increase the turnout.” Nominations will be open in the next five school days, Chumley said. Any student interested in running for a position in the Student Association should watch for the nomination dates and then go by the student government offices in the Cone University Center and fill out a nomination form. "I think everything will run smoothly this year,” Chumley said, “with the voting machines it should be fair and honest. The people at the County Elections Board will come and count the votes for us and the results should be out one hour after the polls close.” (Photo by Pam Breeze) Cathy Allred is to serve as co-chair of the Election and Publicity Committee with Tom Chumley. Carolina Journal gets new racks Kim Burns announces her bid for student body president By Kathy Espin Another student body president hopeful has declared her candidacy for what looks like an interesting race. (Photo by Bob Henderson) Student body presidential aspirant Kim Burns. Kim Burns, a junior in the English department, said she had decided last semester she wanted to run but there have been many points of indecision since that time. “You know, every time someone else mentions they might run, you stop and think, ‘do I have a chance against them?’ “ Burns said. Burns said the theme for her cam paign will be “Participation, the key to productivity." She said if she is elected she will concentrate on get ting more qualified people to par ticipate in student government. “I’m still talking to people about things they would like to see changed and improved but one issue I have heard a lot of people talk about is changing the allocation procedures for student funds," Burns said. Burns, 20, is a native of Charlotte and a graduate of West Mecklenburg High School. She is now a work-study student working in the Student Bank. She has served as freshman class president, a member of the Student Legislature, chair and vice-chair of the Student Legislature Rules Com mittee, special legislative committee chair and as news editor of the Carolina Journal. The Carolina Journal is starting a new "rack- ette.” Begining next Monday, Feb. 26, the Carolina Journal will be located in designated areas around campus. Six “mean green” racks have been placed around campus, in an effort to distribute the paper to as many students as possible. Every Monday and Thursday afternoon, newspapers will be plac ed in these racks located in the following areas: outside the Commuter Cafeteria, beside the candy counter, in the Re sidence Hall Cafeteria, in the Denny overpass and outside the Book store. Bundles will also be dropped off in the dorms, the academic buildings and the gym. Presently, the Carolina Journal is stu dying to see where the best pick-up areas for students are. If any students have sugges tions or ideas, please call 597-2325. Plans are being made to order more racks and locate more distribution locations. For now, the staff will be looking at pick-up in these designa ted areas. If any theft or damage is done to the racks, the service will be discontinued and past distribution methods will resume. Hopefully, students will cooperate with the this effort and report any distribution ideas that may prove beneficial to the news paper.
