Page 5 ua The Student Newspaper of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte Volume XVI, Number 5 Charlotte, North Carolina Monday, July 7, 1980 Legislators Looking To Oust Bsa By Rick Monroe Carolina Journal Editor The Student Legislature tabled a motion to oust the Black Student Union from their offices in the Student Government Office Complex. The motion, sponsored by Leah Williams and seconded by the Executive Committee, called for all clubs and organizations which have offices in the Complex be notified by the Chair of Legislature to vacate their offices by a set date. The BSU is the only organization in that category. Barry Brown, who supported the bill, said the of fice space was needed by the Student Legislature Committee Chairs and the Class Presidents. “The BSU will get use out of the office along with other students.” Williams added. She said that while the BSU represents over 800 black students, the legislators who are slated to take over the office represent all 9,000 UNCC students—including the 800 blacks. Mike Kemp, unsuccessful Student Body Presidential candidate and head of the BSU said his organization encompassed much more than any of the other clubs and organizations on campus. He also said there was a conflict of interest in the Ex- cutive Committee working on the bill since the vacated offices would be given to committee chairs and class presidents—the same legislators who comprise the Executive Council. In answering allegations tnai past BSU presi dent Karen Houston said the BSU office was never fully utilized during the previous year, Kemp con tended the office would be “used extensively this year.” Rodney Hinson spoke against the measure. He felt moving the BSU would further separate black and white students. “In West Charlotte (High School) blacks and whites got along fine. When I came here it seems to me blacks and whites are more apart, and go their separate ways.” Student Body President, Ron Olsen, noted the possibility of getting office space in the old ad- uunistration building once the new Reese building is completed. It was suggested that a committee be established to look into alternate locations for the BSU. “No matter how this comes out, we’ve got to push for office space immediately.” Olsen said. 49er Mascots... ...were painted on the road leading into campus last week by several menbers of the Student Legislature. The project was headed by Leah Williams (center) who was head of the Promotions commit tee of the Legislature last year. At the end of the school year, she and other workers took the project on forthemselves. Executive Committee OK’s Debate By Rick Monroe Carolina Journal Editor The Excutive Committee of the Student Legislature passed a motion allocating $1,820 to the UNCC Debate Team during last night’s meeting. The motion will come before the full legislature Thursday. The motion passed even though the team is not a club or organization chartered by the legislature and would not have been otherwise eligible for funds. J^ e motion, sponsored by Finance Committee Chair Barry Brown, gave the funds to the team on a one-time basis as a special academic group. The motion originally read to give the funds to the team as a “special interest group,” but it was amended in order to prevent other groups from ap plying under the those circumstances. Representative Vaughn Winborne objected to funding of the team without it going through the usual chartering process. “The debating team is a favored child.” he said. The the team was established last year by a Team Budget group of interested students. In march of this year, the group submitted a proposal to the College of Social and Behavioral Sciences asking for a class in debating to be established. The proposal was accepted and Chancellor E. K. Fretwell earmarked approximately $2,000 for the instructor for the course. The team, which was organized with the help of Student Body President Ron Olsen, will, according to the group’s proposal, “reflect very well upon the University’s intellectual commitment.” In other action, the Committee passed a motion by Senior Class President Laurah Van Poole call ing for all clubs and organizations which had failed to recharter to loose their Student Fees funding. The clubs involved are: the Gay Student Union, Alpha Phi Omega, The Way Campus Outreach, UNCC Honor Society, Student Alumni Associa tion, Eakantar, Sora Area, and the Philosophical Society. The total funding involved in with the organiza tions is approxamately $5,000.
