Walder Wins
Class Election
By Chip Wilson
Carolina Journal Staff Writer
John Walder defeated Danny
Klocke in the race for Freshman class
president in elections held Tuesday
and Wednesday.
Students also voted for legislators
from the four residence halls, two
apartment areas and undeclared ma
jors, in a light turnout.
Walder, a Greensboro native who
currently serves on the Scott dorm
council, said his victory came about
by ‘running the best campaign I
could.’
One of the activities of his cam
paign included an address to the 4th
house of Sanford dorm, made up of
freshmen women. That visit helped
achieve his margin of victory over
Klocke, according to one supporter of
Walder who lived there.
‘We encouraged those girls up there
to vote—big time. There are 80 girls
up there who said they would vote for
any guy who is good looking.’
In the race for Holshouser represen-
titive, Mike Harris edged Lee Floyd
37 to 32. Scott representative Rick
Charlotte, North Carolina
Barger won by 20 votes over Reggie
Nelson—57 to 37.
Two dorm representatives slid to
their wins without competition. John
Gordan II of Moore Hall and Sharon
Chisholm from Sanford Hall had few
voting against them with margins of
89 to 11 and 34 to 8, respectively.
In an election with few votes cast,
an even lighter turnout in the Phase
II and III balloting reflects in the vic
tory of Jan Hobbs over Terry Brown.
The count there was 10 to 7
‘The turnout is disappointing,’ said
Hobbs, who estimated that 470
students in the amphitheater area
could have voted. ‘I hope to get
students more involved in campus ac
tivities, as thier representative.’
Few commuters appeared at the
polls to elect thier legislators. Out of
a field of 11 candidates, Barry Brown
lead four other victors including Mike
Derby, Holly Dixon, Phil Fleming
and Jim Johnston.
Undeclared majors affirmed their
support of Baker Smith III as their
legislator, by a margin of 5 votes to 2.

Purgason Takes Court
Balloting In Landslide
The Results
By Chip Wilson

The top vote getter of the 1979 stu
dent court election surpassed eight
contenders earning the top position
again, while voters ousted the acting
chief justice in elections held Tuesday
and Wednesday.
Polly Purgason, who was first
elected to the court last year, led five
winners with 68.3 per cent of the vote.
Out of 480 ballots cast she received
328 votes.
Other winners following Purgason
were Denise Davis with 53.7 per cent
or 258 votes, Bo Matthews with 51.4
per cent, Stephanie Cato with 51.2 per
cent, and David Clark with 47.7 per
cent.
Shock appeared on the faces of
observers when ballot counters an
nounced that Judy Marothy, acting
chief justice, fell behind Clark’s 229
votes with 211 votes, putting her in
sixth place and off the court.
Marothy, who was first elected in
the fall of 1979, was elected Lt.
Justice in the spring of 1980 and took
over the chief justice’s seat in the
beginning of this semester when then-
Chief Justice Mike Dunn stepped
down from the post.
