Jo Ann Conrad, who is with Belks’ Buying Service. (We noticed that she is sporting a lovely en gagement ring now.) Hugh Adams, who was president of the Student Council last year, and his wife dropped by. Jim Kilgo, who was president of the Student Council in 1949-50. He will graduate in June from UNC. Mary Camp and Lew is Camp are graduating from UNC. We have learned that Dick Boward is graduating from Catawba College in June. Maurice Wayne Hooks is grad uating from Davidson. One of our alumni, Crayton Rowe, has been quite prominent in the dramatic field. He is attending the University of Georgia and played the part of John Apply in the May play, “The Late George Apply.” Richard Gordon, also an alumnus of CC, has recently been elected vice-president of the Charlotte Association of Life Underwriters. Mr. Gordon also attended UNC. He has been in the life insurance business for three years, and last year sei-ved as treasurer of the local Life Underwriters Associa tion. Sigma Phi Alpha Initiates Eight The members of Sigma Pi Alpha, national honorai y language fratern ity, will initiate eight new members into the fraternity this quarter. The students who will be admitted into this organization arc success fully completing courses in either French or Spanish and have been recommended by their respective teachers for membership. Eligi bility for membership in Sigma Pi Alpha is based upon the student’s ability to understand and speak a foreign language and upon his unusual interest in this language. The initiation will be held on May 2.3, 1952, at 8:15 P. M. here at the College. Immediately fol lowing the ritual the members will attend the social planned for that evening by the Social Committee. Those being initiated into the fraternity this quarter are: Frank Pernill Carter, Arthur C. Farley, Jr., Miss Sula Floros, Michael Hamilton Palmer, Walter Herbert Peake, Jr., James Pearson, Miss Amy N. Frye, and Hubert Allen Womack, Jr. Officers for Sigma Pi Alpha for the coming year will be elected at a meeting soon after the initiation. The alvisors for the fraternity are Mrs. Frances Hoyle and Dr. Pierre Macy. Sor'ty, Frat. News Rho Gamma ■■\lpha Sorority, which was comparatively inactive last quarter due to rather heavy schedules of the members, has livened up somewhat this quarter and has accomplished quite a bit. The new drapes in the Student Union Building were presented by Rho Gamma Alpha. The thorough cleaning of the Student Union was accomplished by the sorority. Sigma Lambda Chi (better known as "the Old Keymen Fraternity”) will again give a scholarship to some worthy-would- be-C.C.-student. The scholarship will be awarded sometime in May. Last year’s recipient was Mike Palmer. On May 16 the Frat. took time out from working on the Student Union Building to treat themselves to a weenie roast at Cordelia Park. We are proud to say that this little social was a howling success, and that we wish the school socials would be as well attended. Student Council Meets The last meeting of the year for the 1951-52 Student Council was held May 7 in the library annex. Jack Proctor, president, presided at the meeting. A financial report of the Charlotte Collegian was given by Michael Palmer. An additional $8.3 was appropriated for the Collegian, bringing total appropriations for the paper this quarter to $383. Bill Scholl, editor of the annual, sum med up the work of the annual staff this year. The most important issue at the meeting was the organization of an honor society at Charlotte College. The motion that such an organization be formed at CC was passed by the Council. An applica tion for a chapter of Phi Theta Kappa, a National Junior College Honor Fraternity, will be made in the near future. Until plans with this fraternity are completed, the organization will assume another name. The pxocedures are expected to be completed by September. Membership in Phi Theta Kappa is restricted to students of high character and leadership, who have distinguished themselves scholas tically. Members of the Student Council, and its advisor, were entertained at a party at the Student Union Building on May 20. Mrs. Edith F. Winningham is advisor for the Council. I
