Vol. 7, No. 2 Charlotte College, Charlotte, N. C. November 8, 1955
STUDENT COUNCIL
During- the past few months the Student Council has met several times
to thrash out problems concerning Charlotte Colleffe and to j)lan activities
for the followinff months. The Council has decided to meet twice monthly
—on the first Monday and third Tuesday of every month. Students are
cordially invited to sit in on these meetings and listen to the problems
being batted-around within the group. Whether you students know it or
not, the Student Council has much to do with the trend of your days at
C. C., and we want to make them good ones.
The Student Council is proud to have such a fine President as Bill Reid.
Bill has helped the newspaper on several occasions and is doing a fine job
with the Council. He really keeps the members on their toes and has
things running smoothly. Bill is married and he and his wife have just
adopted a little girl.
During the Council’s last few meetings we have discussed some of the
changes that should be made over last year’s system. One big accom
plishment was the appointing of Student Advisors. The assemblies and
coffee hours have gone-off much more smoothly than in the past because
of their supervision.
Another problem that has been solved is whether or not C. C. should
have a sport’s chairman. The chairman’s duties would be to keep an
account of the expenditures of our sports and also set up a system
whereby money could be collected from spectators at these events. Last
year C. C. did not receive money from spectators and this we hope to
change. A few of the Council’s members have suggested a certain athlete
and his name will be submitted to the President in the very near future.
The budget, which can be found in this issue, has been drawn-up, sub
mitted, and approved by the Student Council. Bill Vickery did an ex
cellent job on this l)udget. Everyone was happy when they saw the “green
stuff” that they could spend.
Mrs. Winningham, last year's advisor to the Student Council, has been
re-elected to the post again this year. She has done marvels with the
Council in the past and we feel sure that she will continue to do so in
the future.
The Student Council would also like to give their thanks to Martha
Voyles for her assistance as “acting secretary.” Martha will continue
on this job until elections are held and a secretary can be elected.
Your Student Council will appreciate any advice or suggestions that
you, the students, might have concerning problems or phases of life
at C. C. We hope to serve you in as many ways as possible and make
life more enjoyable down at Charlotte College.
C. C. COMMITTEES
The committees down here at
Charlotte College are working vig
orously to make this a big year at
C. C. The committees are doing a
fine job and we would like to com
mend them in this column.
We can begin by giving a “big
hand” to the Assembly Committee.
The committee has already given
us two very successful assemblies
and will do a terriffic job in the
future. John T. Scroggs, chairman,
heads up the committee and has
some very excellent members help
ing him.
Darrell Avery will direct the
publicity side of the work and will
be backed up by his dependable
committee members. Darrell is also
tackling some other big jobs around
the school. Darrell is helping the
annual and the paper as a photo
grapher. All the signs and posters
you see around the halls are the
work of our publicity chairman.
The committee has also made plans
to buy a much needed bulletin
board for the hall.
The committee that will affect
the largest number of us is the
Social Committee. This committee
has two wonderful co-chairmen in
Frank Garner and the busiest girl
down at C. C., Patsy Hartsell. The
first dance of the year was held
November 5 and everyone had a
big time. We can’t wait until the
Christmas Dance rolls around. This
is usually the biggest and most suc
cessful of the year.
We also have a new committee
that should give our sports a
boost. Johnny Culp will lead the
Sports Committee and we think he
will do a wonderful job.
Well, these are the guys and dolls
that keep things going down here
at C. C. If they ever call on you
for help please don’t hesitate to
accept.
ANNUAL NEWS
The C. C. annual staff under the
guidance of Ken Harris have been
working diligently for the last few
months to give C. C. the best an
nual that we have ever had.
Pictures are now being made by
the Simpson Studios and we hope
that everyone will give them your
assistance.
We are also hoping that plans
will again be made this year to
WHAT C. C. MEANS
TO ME
Charlotte city buses are a men
ace to society at five-thirty in the
afternoon. Standing room is where
you make it, and then for the brave
passenger only. Such a situation
as this is likely to spur new ac
quaintances willingly or no.
It was in a conversation with
such an acquaintance that I was
asked by a well dressed woman of
approximately forty, “Where are
you going to school?”
My answer, “Charlotte College,”
brought a politely indifferent “Oh,
how nice,” and the conversation
ended.
My stop was next or 1 would
have told the lady why Charlotte
College is probably the most valu
able and vital institution in Char
lotte today.
I would have told her what a
challenge it was to see Korean wai’
veterans, housewives, and business
men, starting over again in my
freshman English class, so that
they, with me, could claim the rec
ognition due the educated.
I would have told her how C. C.’s
student leaders and its teachers are
working to make it more a real
college in all respects than it has
ever been before.
Perhaps she was thinking, “But
my daughter has the advantages
of sorority life as well as other
campus activities.”
She doesn’t know that C. C.’s
first dance was just around the
corner, that we have a good soror
ity, a top-notch basketball team,
and numerous other working or
ganizations.
I came to Charlotte College with
the idea of getting through as
quickly as possible and going on
to a “real” college. I found when
I got here, though, that, like the
lady on the bus, I was badly mis
taken, that C. C. was college now,
and as the years progress and all
the new wrinkles are smoothed
over, C. C. will mean college to
hundreds of Charlotte high school
graduates. It does to me.

elect superlatives. We suggest that
you become familiar with your fel
low students and begin thinking
about who you would like to see as
C. C.’s outstanding students.
STUDENT COUNCIL
CORNER
With each publication of the
Charlotte Collegian a committee
chairman is asked to say a few
words about his committee. This
publication has asked the assembly
committee chairman to explain his
job. The committee is headed by
John T. Scroggs and has four effi
cient staff members. These are Don
Snyder, Raeford Brown, Pat Mul-
vilhill, and Dotsie Snyder. Dr.
Pierre Macy is the faculty advisor.
It is the aim of the Assembly
Committee to give better and more
interesting assemblies in the fu
ture. We have had two assemblies
this quarter. We of the Assembly
Committee hope that everyone of
you who attended the assemblies
enjoyed them.
The Assembly Committee needs
support and you, the students, can
give us that support. There is a
suggestion box in the hall near the
office. Use it. Let us know the type
of assembly you prefer. We will
do our utmost to please you.
Our Thanksgiving assembly is in
the making now and we hope that
all of you will attend. Remember
that the assemblies are for you—
the students. If you have any sug
gestions we recommend that you
see any of the committee members
or drop your suggestions in the
suggestion box.
There is an old saying that sums
up our aims. “The best is yet to
come.”
