EXAMS ARE HERE
Exams are here (as if you didn’t know it already). This is one thing
that nobody at C.C. looks forward to, unless there are a few maniacs
running around the halls. Yep, we’ve got to find out what we’ve learned.
What a horrible thought!
1 don’t like to look back over the last few months, but sometimes I
can’t help finding my.self day-dreaming about the by-gone days in school.
Sometimes I even have to l)lush when my mind strikes upon certain
incidents. I can remember a few chances w'hen I had the opportunity
to assert myself. How in the world was I so stupid? Why in the world
didn't I study for that hum-dinger that I had in English? I know what;
I’ll buckle down next quarter. Yea, next quarter, next quarter.
Well there are probably no doubting Thomases at C.C. now that the
first quarter is reaching its last few days. Everyone now knows that
you’ve got to study to get by and that no one’s going to give you any
thing free or hand you anything on a silver platter.
But here is one thing that we can look forward to. After these infer
nal exams, we have a two weeks suspended sentence before we start
back at it with sweat and tears. Before we go for another month, we
want to wish everyone a merry Christmas and as someone else has said,
but which is very appropriate:
“I hope Santa brings everyone of you straight A’s for Christmas.”
APPRECIATION
The Christmas season has rolled around again and everyone probably
feels a little different twinge in his heart and a bouncing, jolly, and
exciting expression in his voice. Of course, it’s the magic of this single
day that does it. I don’t know exactly how to explain this oddity, but
this season seems to lift the maze of gloom that has collected within us
during the past year, and prescribe a smile to exterminate our troubles.
This is probably the reason that I would like to give everyone who
has contributed to the success of the paper a big present. But, because
of financial reasons, I can only say thanks and try to give them the
mention that they are more than due. Here are only a few of the
heros and heroines.
I’m sure that the person who writes our Gossip Column, and some
other articles, does not want his or her name mentioned. We couldn’t
get the inside stories that we seem to obtain, if I blabbed. But I do
want to say that this person has done a wonderful job and I know that
you have enjoyed her work.
The young man who writes our sports column also wants to stay out
of the picture, but I can tell his initials which are (Johnny Culp).
UH-O, I said it. Well, anyway he has done a wonderful job along with
a good job on the basketball court. Raeford Brown has also been a
feather in our hat on the sports scene.
W'e also want to thank other members of our staff such as Gwen
Daly, and the committee chairmen who have added to the success of
our paper.
Last but not least in any manner is the Collegian’s advisor—Miss Denny.
Miss Denny has given me many suggestions and has acquainted me with
the correct duties of an editor. She also copy-reads all the copy that
goes in the paper. I couldn’t have done without her.
GOSSIP
Here is some of the latest news
about the students of Charlotte
College. Some of it is true and some
of it is almost true. A few of our
fellow students would like to see
their names in print and others
would like to have something in
the paper about themselves but
would prefer not to have their
names mentioned. Since it is almost
Christmas we are going to play
Santa Claus and give every one
what they w-ant.
The is a certain freshman girl
who thinks that a certain Chem
istry student is just a “doll.” All
this gal would like to have for
Christmas is for that guy to notice
her.
.Joanne Hovis and Charles Leth-
coe are getting married next June.
We would like to wish them the
best of everything.
Johnny Culp has a secret love.
He won’t tell us who she is but
from what we hear things are
pretty serious.
There is a sophomore boy who
is planning to get married next
year. As for who the lucky girl
is we don’t know. W^e do know that
this boy has narrowed the field
down to three girls and he is not
taking any more applications. He
is making a trip to Winthrop real
soon so he may let us in on the
big news after that.
Betsy Brown and Jimmy Babbs
have discovered that there is a lot
of Geology that they need to talk
over together.
There is a girl in liberal arts who
would like to meet a boy that takes
Chemistry at 6:00. This boy is
tall and has blond hair. Here’s
hoping that their paths cross real
soon.
Martha Voyles and Johnny C.
make a real cute couple.
We hope to see everyone at the
Big Christmas Dance, It is going
to be great, so all you guys grab a
gal and come.
Merry Christmas and Happy
New Year.
SPANISH CLUB
The Spanish Club has been a
great success during the fall quar
ter and looks as if this club is going
to be a permanent establishment
even when the present members
are long-gone from Charlotte Col
lege.
The club has already held a
couple of fine and very successful
meetings and is now planning for
their next meeting which will prob
ably be held some time in January.
The club is planning to buy club
pins and the orders are now being
taken. Bill Reid, who always seems
to have the initiative to do an in
numerable amount of extra work
OWLS OPEN SEASON
As the first few weeks of the
basketball season come to a close,
we see that the Owls have played
five games so far. The first game,
a victory for Charlotte College, was
fought with a rough but highly dis
organized Army Reserve Team.
The lone conference game saw
the maroon and white of the Owls
losing to a tall and fast E.M.I.
five. The Owls stunned the very
large E.M.I. crowd by jumping off
to a quick lead and holding a 22
to 14 first quarter lead. But then
E.M.I.’s tremendous rebounding
and fast breaks began to take in
the slack and slow the Owls down
in their quest for a very big upset.
As the final whistle sounded the
scoreboard read: E.M.I. 84, Char
lotte College 72.
The Owls first defeat seemed to
show them the points on which they
had to work and they bounced back
and thrashed a very good and
smooth working Jaycee five, led by
Frank Gossitt.
A few days later the Owls ven
tured over to the North Charlotte
YMCA where they tangled with the
Monarchs, Charlotte’s semipro
team. You may have seen a write
up about this team in the Charlotte
Observer. At the half the under
dog’s again found themselves ahead
by seven points. But the Monarchs,
not to be denied, came roaring back
in the second half and left the floor
with a fourteen point margin. Al
though the Owls dropped this game,
they looked very impressive.
The C. C. Owls then played host
to Schwam Motor Company at
Piedmont Gym. This team consisted
mostly of players who, last year,
played with Hall’s Furniture Com
pany. This game really turned out
to be a “wild and wooly” battle.
As the game ended the Owls found
themselves on the winning side of
a 96-94 score.
The Owls will find themselves
on the road for their “prior to
Christmas” contests and will go
against two undefeated teams in
their next engagements. P. J. C.
and Campbell will play host to the
Owls and a hot game is expected
of each of them. Campbell is heavily
favored to take the championship
crown again this year.
In our next issue we will again
try to keep you up-to-date with
the Owls. Whether the Owls win
or lose, always remember to come
out and see the boys whenever
they are in town.
ai-ound the school, has again done
an excellent job on selling the club
members on this idea.
We are all looking forward to
the following meetings with our
fellow Espanol students. This club
has been a life-saver by taking our
minds off school problems.
