May 22, 1957 THE CHARLOTTE COLLEGIAN Page 3 SPORTS THE THUNDER STICK IJy Dave Harmer When a person is browsing’ around tlie Dark Continent looking for soraething big to shoot, he is usually advised to take along the largest piece of artillery he can find. It is a safety factor that is implied by the old “kill or get kill” axiom. However, when a person does plan on going after such big game as elephant or rhino, he im mediately thinks of his weapon as being a large caliber British rifle. Until the present time, England has succeeded in monopolizing the big game rifle market (450 caliber and above). Here in America, there has been little development in the production of either a rifle or a cartridge to equal the British guns for use, in Africa or the North American Continent, on large and dattgeioiis game. This harrier was finally broken last June when Winchester announced its new .458 Magnum. It is the first American rifle and cartridge to be put into mass production that is of Meet your friends at the RAMBLER Sandwich Shop Arnold Jewelers Frank V. The rifle is basically a Model 70 Winchester in Super (Jrade that has been modified in the stock and action so as to absorb the added recoil and pressures that are cre ated by large caliber rifles. The accuracy of the .458 is tops in its field; grouping better than 4 minutes of an angle at 100 yards. For the person who is planning that trip to Africa for elephants or perhaps to the mountains for that grizzly, he couldn’t select a better rifle for insuring a full game bag. If you are wondering if that muz zle energy is actually going to be enough to stop whatever you’re after, you might try stepping in front of a fast moving freight train. You’ll get the same effect. If you still are not satisfied, you might try what A1 Weber of Cali fornia did. He took a Russian anti tank rifle action and fitted it with a .50 caliber machine gun })arrel. He said it was ideal for knocking off ground hogs at 2,000 yards and strong winds didn’t faze the bullet at all up to 500 yards. C. Legislature is making over the picture “The Sun Also Rises,” should make it one of the box office favorites. A banned picture seems to be a great drawing card for the public. Read the next issue for an interview with one of the top brass of movie industry covering this. Dealer's Choice This could also be classed as a “full house.” The dealer’s choice for the month is a toss-up between “The Girl in the Kremlin” and “The Buster Keaton Story.” Both of the above pictures are very good and both are completely different. “The Girl in the Kremlin” stars Lex Barker and Zsa Zsa Gabor, Jeffrey Stone, and Natalia Daryll (the feminine answer to Yul Bryn- ner). The original story “The Se cret Diary of Stalin” has been acclaimed by columnists as a great drama picture. The best description of the story is—Stalin—a story of his life and loves—and of an enchanting girl who was his great favorite. The Universal Interna tional picture should be seen by all people who enjoy an action packed, fast-moving, cloak and dagger melodrama. “The Buster Keaton Story” is one of the better comedy pictures of the year. Donald O’Connor is cast as Buster Keaton—the man who made millions laugh with his side-splitting antics. Ann Blythe is co-starred in this humorous picture. The above pictures prove the fact that movies are better than ever. Make plans now to see “Public Pigeon No. 1,’’ with Red Skeleton over the weekend at the Manor. It’s great and full of laughs. Dealer's Dope The movie industry seems to be turning to Broadway and T.V. for some of its original successful plays. Check the newspapers for these coming attractions: “Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter,” “Twelve Angry Men,” “Saint Joan,’’ and “The Desk Set.” Don’t class me as a “Joker” but don’t you think “Bernadine” by Pat Boone and Bing Crosby’s rendition of “Man on Fire” will not only be hit tunes but also top movies? Remember: Don’t swelter and get all shook up, keep cool, man, go to the movies!!!!!! MASTEN REALTY CO. REAL ESTATE—PROPERTY MANAGEMENT—INSURANCE—APPRAISALS 116 W. 3rd St. Charlotte 2, N. C.
