(RIFLE Continued)
it has a mid-range trajectory of .6
of an inch, and at 200 yards, 2.5
inches. This cartridge has also been
adopted by the North Atlantic
Treaty Organization to help stand
ardize its small arms system. It
is also thinking strongly of adopt
ing the new M14 rifle.
The new rifle has a few char
acteristics of the old Grand. The
main one of these is the action. It
is gas operated and has been
shortened to accept the new shell
and modified to accommodate a 20
round clip. To the rear, on the
right hand side of the receiver, a
button has been added so that the
rifle may switch from semi- to
fully automatic fire. The standard
issue will be semi-automatic only;
however, a heavier-barreled model
that will replace the existing
B.A.R. will be able to alternate its
fire.
The barrel has been shortened
and some wood removed around
the forend to reduce weight. The
overall weight saving is about one
pound less than the Grand’s 9.0
pounds.
(INTERVIEW Continued)
Matthews thinks that a commu
nity college like C. C. is a fine
thing. He would like very much to
see it turned into a four-year insti
tution. He says that when he thinks
of all the working people in this
area who want an education, he
realizes how keen is the need for
such a school. He believes that it
would provide them an opportunity
that they would not have other
wise.
Matthews has been fascinated by
hot-rods for quite some time. He
bought his first car when he was
sixteen with money he had earned
by helping his father on the farm.
He now has his third car, and he
says that it is the best one he has
had. He is also quite interest
ed in baseball. His favorite team
is the Red Sox, but he predicts that
the Yankees will win the pennant
this year.
