Are Hopping
Lifting their voices and lend
ing their spirit, the seven 49’ers
comprising C.C.’s cheerleading
team have started prancing on
the waxed woods as they pre
pare for the basketball season
coming fast to Charlotte Col
lege.
Carol Holden and Tom Win
stead, Head and Co-Head Cheer
leaders, are expressing high
hopes for the coming season
and hold a very optimistic view
toward school participation in
the sport.
Presently they are arranging
a student bus for the St. An
drew’s game. Signing up has
been slow, but is expected to
pick up soon.
Between classes a Pj\. sy
stem located in the lounge will
announce game times and scores
and wiU introduce the players
and cheerleaders to the student
body.
On order is a victory flag to
be displayed when the team wins.

Getting More
From Reading
By Joyce Pressley
Shakespeare is Shakespeare
regardless of who is doing the
reading; however, interpreta
tions of his works certainly dif
fer with the reader. Take male
and female college students, for
instance. When asked to inter
pret the same phrases, they
come up with greatly different
ideas, as in the following:
PHRASE: “For menhavemar-
ble, women waxen minds.”
BOY: “Girls are all dumb.”
GIRL: “Boys are hard-
headed.”
•*
PHRASE: “A rat?”
BOY: “A rat is the bad guy
in a movie.”
GIRL: “Where?”
**
PHRASE: “Let us make a
felony of small beer."
BOY: “Make it a law to sell
only large beers!”
QRL: “People shouldn’t
drink.”

Hunch About The Universe
Professor Spillard hopes to
relate Energy to Space in some
manner comparable to Einstein’s
success with Matter and Energy.
Tentatively the new formula
reads: S = ec^ . but
that may not be its final state
ment.
This revolutionary concept
may prove that space is but a
rarified form of energy. Thus
the current notion about a re
ceding universe would be con
tradicted, and the curvature of
space could be explained as an
attempt to make room for itself.
In practical application this
new theory will solve space tra
vel nicely, as the possibilities
are as infinite as space itself.
Just think of condensing a bil
lion light years of any tra
jectory into a fresh burst of
energy to speed the intergalac-
tic ship along the remaining arc
of the voyage!
Of course, any surplus energy
would be squeezed thriftily into
reserve matter. Thus spare parts
could be easily fabricated en
route, and expedient repairs
would be routine.
“The most charming thing
about this theory.” Prof. Spil-
Ired stated, “is that we can
never run out of space for
things.”

Coach Edelman Back
By Tom Winstead

French Club
‘Tours' France
By Joyce Pressley
The Charlotte College French
Club met for the second time
Saturday night, October 24. Held
in a lecture room at the new
Y.M.CJV., the meeting featured
a tour through France by means
of two very colorful films. The
group visited Paris, Nice, the
iDeautiful castles of the Loire
River-- Amboise, Blois, Cham-
bord, Chenonceaux, and Azay-
le-Rideau-- Nimes, Monaco --
including the home of Princess
Grace at Monte Carlo, and many
other places of interest in
France.
After the films had been
shown. Dr. Pierre Macy, advi
sor to the club, led a discussion
on French dress, customs, holi
days, eating habits, flowers, etc.
Mademoiselle Martin, another of
Charlotte College’s French tea
chers, led an argument on the
merits of French food as op
posed to those of the Ameri
can cuisine; the discussion was
mainly about French bread and
truffles, a delicacy found parti
cularly in the French kitchen.
The meeting was brought to
an early close because of the
dance given for Charlotte
College students that same night.
ADVICE TO THE LOVELORN
—A broken' heart mends faster
than important things.
Commented a student, gazing
at his corrected theme: “This
paper looks like it bled to death!”
in Political Science at Charlotte
College, and coaching the 49’ers
in basketball.
This schedule makes a full
day of teaching and coaching
from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m., but
the coach says he thoroughly
enjoys the combination of work.
He is glad to have the oppor
tunity to work again vrith CC*s
basketball team.
Coach Edelman’s ■ only com
ment on the team was that it
lacks height, even though a coin
pie of players stand above six
feet. His impression of the team
is one of good spirit and hard
work, which promise a highly
disciplined ball-playing team.
There will be no free lance
planing this year, says the coach.
Charlotte College’s coach
knows good discipline on a bas
ketball court, having coached one
summer with Frank McGuire at
the University of North Caro
lina.
Coach Irving Edelman and his
wife have four children. Twd
are in school at Shamrock Gar
dens, and two are too young to
enter school.
