Jerry discusses his engineering plans. Our Olympic Diving Champion Among Charlotte College’s newest foreign students is Tarokh Taefi, commonly known to his fellow students by his American nickname, Jerry. Jerry is from Abadan, Iran. He studied civil engineering for four years in the Institute of Technology, which is a branch of La Fayette University in Abadan. He was preparing to continue his education in San Francisco when a friend at the University of North Caro lina at Chapel Hill suggested a less distant college. The final decision was Charlotte College. Here, Jerry plans to study mechanical engineering. He also wants to acquire degrees in electrical engineering and town planning which he hopes to complete at Harvard. Jerry explains that engineers are very much needed in Iran. In his free time, Jerry enjoys sports. He is a member of his organization, the Y.M.C.A. He believes this to be one of the finest and most worthwhile organizations one can belong to. He is a college basketball player, table-tennis champion of his home town, Abadan, and an avid chess player. FAC Spins Wheels Of Registration By Carol BaRby Let us pause for a moment in the mad turmoil of existence to pay tribute to an unsung band of stout hearted patriots, officially known as the Freshman Advisory Council of Charlotte College. The FAC (faithful and courageous) is responsible for the happy fact that most of the freshmen and transfer students came through the harrow ing experience of Orientation and Registration Week only slightly scarred, and that is an achievement worthy of note! (The FAC mem bers did not fare quite so well, and visiting hours are from four to six every Sunday.) The efficient head of this daunt less group, Bob Schaeffer, staunch ly maintains that things were much smoother than they appeared. He listed the schedule of events as follows: Sunday—“We gave tours of the campus and facilities for the new students and their parents. There was a reception with punch and cookies in the Game Room of the College Union afterwards. Dean and Mrs. McCoy were the hosts of this pleasant afternoon.” Monday—“Monday night we had an assembly for the new students and then supper at the College Union. Each organization had a booth to interest the new students and the Slimy River Bottom Boys, the Caravelles, and the Winstons provided the entertainment.” (The President of the Student Council arrived at the assembly about a minute before it began and didn't quite know his notes. Great ad- libbing Dudney!) Tuesday—“That was a mess!” The returning students saw their advisors in the morning; the new students, in the afternoon; and the returning night students saw their advisors that night. The real fun came when it was learned that there was a slight shortage of tran scripts, pre-registration forms, and faculty advisors for the new stu dents, but our resourceful FAC again saved the day! The floor of the registrar’s office v/as soon covered with pre-registration forms and students separating them. (Never again!” sighed Mr. Gro gan.) Wednesday—“The returning stu dents registered. The FAC mem bers were allowed to register early. This was their only concrete re gard.” Though Bob noted that their members decreased just a bit after this, “several faithful” stayed on to register the returning night stu dents. Thursday—“The freshmen and transfer students, day and night, registered.” Need more be said of that day freshmen, FAC, or facul ty? Friday—“Friday was a catch all,” and Saturday—“We slept ALL day long!” Bob wanted to give special thanks to a few of his troop for devotion and service above and beyond the call of duty. Jim Rey nolds “knocked himself out, run ning all over the school.” Johnny Nicholaides and Ronnie Rodgers manned the door. (Ronnie found out what a demanding job this Jerry’s most noted success in sports is his swimming and diving ability. He holds the position of Olympic Diving Cham pion. Six years of exnerience lies behind this title. During a period of inactivity due to water on the knee, Jerry spent much time reading books on one of his favorite sports — swimming, diving forms etc. When he was at last able to resume his normal activities, he began immediate practice at the pool, which included seven hundred dives a day! This same year Jerry became the champion for his city, but be cause of his work he was unable to compete for his country. The following year, however, he went on to earn the title he holds today. Jerry has traveled in Austria, Germany, Belgium, Eng land, and many other European countries. He was especially impressed w'ith the cleanliness and good health programs of Germany. Having been in the United States only a little more than a month, he speaks very favorably of this country. The only thing he can’t get accustomed to is the sales tax! The people at Charlotte College have impressed Jerry by their friendliness and kindness. “I haven’t met anyone I don’t like,” says Jerry. was when he bravely told a foot ball hero that he couldn’t go up stairs. The hero thought differ ently and went right ahead. It took Ronnie and four other boys to stop him at the top of the stairs!) Don Hughes “stayed ever night until the last light was out.” Mor ris spearman kept the course sheet (section closed and opened) up-to- date (He deserves the Bronze Star for that!), and Susan Weber ‘help ed all summer.” Dudney Jarnigan, Patsy Helf- ner, Andria Prutnick, and Ronnie Webber spent hours in Pean Mc Coy’s classroom sorting IBM cards. Bobby Davis did a “little bit of everything.” Bob wished it em phasized that there were, of course, many others too numerous to men tion, and this list is just a re presentative sample. Naturally some things went wrong, as they always seem to have a way of doing. Some poor souls filled out all of those inter minable IBM cards, only to reach the check table and find that (hor ror of horrors) they couldn’t find a one of them. One resourceful young man carefully filled out the back of the first white card. Then he turned each of the others over and wrote SAME in big letters across them. The annual staff may find itself a bit overloaded by good-looking freshman girls—since its sport editor used his position at the door to good advantage. He doesn’t know for sure how many freshmen girls the sports depart ment recruited, but he can tell you how many phone numbers he has! At its worst the first week of the year can be enough to make even the most determined freshmen renounce college forever, but Char lotte College’s FAC preserved everyone intact and made things easier for them. Bob said they would be active for spring semes ter registration and, meanwhile, they were always available for ad vice. They will do a superb job too, because in just a few short months many of their charges will make up the new, all-wise FAC! GET YOUR NATIONAL REPETORY THEATER TICKETS AT COLLEGE UNION NOW!
