The joint Institute at Misen lieimeraud Lentz s springs is wel represented bv our Cabarrus people Liury men send team there, and return every day. We call special attention to the school notice of Miss Anna Aeal on this page. With the assistance Mrs. Erwin and Miss Lucy Rich mond the school of Miss Neal wil certainly be first class. The foundation of Concord' new Hotel is laid". Much of the wall and the wood work is up few mere weeks and we can boast of a Hotel building equal to any in the fctate. luesuay night a bevy or our young folk had quite a pleasant time at the the residence of Mr. M. M Gillon. It was an ice cream part" and every one in attendance vouch ts for it that it was an enjoyable oc casion. Rev. J. L. McLees, of Charlotte assisted the pastor loci, Rev. Mr, Payne, in the communion services at the Presbyterian church last Sab bath. The services were quite inter estirtg. lhe membership was in creased by an addition of eigl m mbers. A volume of the laws of North Carolina of the legislative assembly of 18S5, belonging to the office of the Superior Court clerk, by some mishap, was misplaced on Saturday before the last prohibition election. Its return will be thankfully ac knowledged at the clerks office. Let us call you attention to the change in M. E.. Castor's adver tisement. Mr. Castor needs no ref erence from us to the people of Ca barrus. His make of furniture, coffins etc., are always up to agree ment. Mr. B. F. Poteet who went to Richmond some weeks ago, accom panied by Dr- Young, to undergo a difficult surgical operation, is now at home and convalescent.. The oper ation was performed by Dr. Hunter McGuire of Richmond, assisted by his brother, Dr. Ned McGuire, of Winchester, Dr. Harrison, of Pe tersburg and Dr. R. S Young, oe our town. We are glad to say that af ter much suffering Mr.. Poteet has found relief and in all probability will once more be hale and hearty. The assistant of ye Standard's local, being one of those who go into ecstasies over a new style spring hat, a duck of a bonnet, a pretty bolt of ribbon, with all of woman's curiosi ty, stepped into Mrs. J. M. Cross' Tuesday evening. The result was that the lowr prices and the quality of all things in Mrs. C's line deplet ed the pocket book of the local as sistant and the real local will be called on for an advance in wages. Dr. R. S. Young has moved into his new orhce in rear ot Fetzer's drug store. The doctor with his usual srood taste, has it splendidly carpeted and in every oth er way nicely furnished. The array of medical volumes that meet the eye on entrance shows that he fully keeps up with modern Physics. The walls are decorated with fine steel engravings of medical men of note. In fact we think a visit to this medical sanctum would be good for any ones health. If you want to raise the wind in times that are dull, I'll give you now gratis this excel lent plan. Take a nickel or dime and go to a store, And purchase a palm leaf fan, of Mrs J. M. Cross. PERSONAL. Mrs. C. A. Benson is visiting her friends and relatives in Concord. Bikle gave us a cordial shake as he passed through town on his way to Misenheimer and Lentz's Springs. Mrs. J. M. Odell and daughter and Miss Mamie Swain left today for Carolina's city by the sea, More head. Mr. Chas. Groner, a Concord boy, who for several years has been in business in Winston paid the home of his boyhood a visit this week. Every one was glad to see him. Master Leander Groner, to the manor born, is at home. Energy, industry and true grit has given this little Concord boy a record in cigar making that is hard to beat, it is said by his employers that he can turn out 1,250 per day. Capt. E. Ilaynesof Charlotte, gave us a pleasant, jolly visit ednesday. He is a square out workman in roof painting and concrete walk work Our friends would find it to their interest to correspond with him if they need any thing done in his line of work. Deputy at large G. W. Means made a seizure on last Sunday night of a horse, wagon and fifty gallons of whisky, two and a half miles from Concord. The violater of the revenue law took to the woods and the deputy at large brought his booty to town. Ye local in noseing around has cast his weather eye on the delapida ted pailings around the Court House yard, and the question pops into his bead m hether it would not be ad visable for our county officials to appropriate a reasonable sum for their remoddleing, or tear the rem nants away and sell them for stove wood, appropriating the proceeds to the school fund. They now look as if a cyclone had been around, on a general rampage and ought to be fixed. Monday night last the Cleve land and Fowle Club, and many ether citizens, assembled in the Court House and listened to Char lotte's young and talented orator, Heriot Clarkson, in behalf of the Democratic party. It is needless for us to say that the address was able, instructive and to the point. The Club is fully aroused to action and will "leave no stone unturned" to give victory to Democracy. Let every Democrat in every township aid them by organizing at once Mi. C, by a rising unanimous vote re ceived the thanks of the audience. Magistrates Conrt Thursday. John Taylor prosecutor and Scott Cowan defendant. The sole cause was a duskev maiden. Judgment by Esqr. Williford, malicious pros ecution. Judgment suspended over John Taylor till the cost be paid. Turtle, Our friends who are fond of tur tle have been quite successful of late. Esq. Willeford has by a pro - cess of his own and at a place known only to himself, secured a half dozen or more, and on Monday Clarance Groner dropped a bag on the floor of the standard omce and in it was an 1U pound turtle. We are now convinced that turtle is a delicacy. The Labor the lllffh Tariff Protects. The sort of "American labor" that the millionaire manufacturers are so anxious to protect is shown by sta tistics of the nationality of the ope latives in the Amory Cotton Mills at Manchester, N. H, Of the 800" one third are French-Canadian and the rest of various nationalities, only slightly, or one-tenth of the whole, being native American." And the Protectionist paper that prints these facts adds that "what is true of this company is also substantially true of the great manufacturing companies in New England." This is the result of high tariffs on goods that all the people use and free trade in the "pauper labor" that produces them, New York WTorld. v Potatoes. ' - 1 Miss Rosa Willeford this week sent us a potatoe that in shape even to the eye spots so very much re sembled a duck that we could hardly belie-e it belonged to the vegetable kingdom. It was a last years sweet potato and ye local feared it would be in "fowl taste to destroy it, and now the skeptical can see it in the possession of the fair donor. Our staunch friend, and model gardener A. Foil, gave us this week the boss Irish Potato of the season. By actual measurement it was 71 inches long. Lenghwise it measured 17 inches around, and 81 the other way. We must thank him for a whole meal. A Republican Voter Arrested with Democratic Tickets in bis Posse s(ons On Tuesday evening the efficient constable of Delphi, in No. 10 town ship was called on to arrest one Oli ver Jefries, colored, on a charge of stealing corn from county surveyor, J. H. Long. The colored citizen of Republican bias was found at the tail end of a threshing machine forking straw. All his rights of American freedom surged up in a moment and the result was that force was necessary to insure his presence before a magistrate He was duly tried and in default of a $100 bond was committed to jail. It appears that our worthy sur veyor suspicioned that his corn pile was getting away rather fast for mere home consumption, so he scattered amongst it a handiul or so of the last election surveyor tickets, and the result was, corn, tickets and all were found in possession of the aable voter, Oliver Jeffries. Editor Standard In behalf of everybody who wishes Cabar rus well represented ia our State Legislatnre, allow us to make this motion, that we send E. De Berry Lentz, of No' 8, to Raleigh as Representative. As a citizen and farmer Mr. L stands amongst the first and foremost. Not only at home among his neighbors, but all over the county, he is recognized as a progressive man, He has cui hia own way to prosperity. He is not only a farmer but he is a friend and aider of every laboring man. In politics his vecord is purely Demo cratic; and in daily business pur suits his record is without stain. He can command not only the party vote, but the battot of every one who knows him. This is without Mr. Lentz's con sent, and we know not whether he would accept if nominated, but we be'iieve every farmer, mechanic and laboring man will secon,d the mo tion to send him anyhow. Lib. Wednesday, July 12. Joint lnatisata, Having failed to get our promised report of the Cabarrus and Stauly Institute at Misenheimer & Lentz's Springs from our "Special" corres pondent, we give our readers the following from the Charlotte Chron icle. Perhaps our correspondent, in his zeal for educational progress and enlightment of the people forgot al together the newspapertorinl influ ence. Perhaps the fair ones in attend ance engrossed allextra houre. So mote it be. The jointTeachers Institute for Ca barrus andStanly counties convened at Misenheimer's Springs, on the 9th., and will continue in session two weeks. On motion of T, J. Je rome, of Alb'emarle, M. L. Barn hardt, of Norwood, was called to act as temporary chairman, and G. F, Barnhardt, of Mt. Pleasant, as temporary tecretaiy. The institute was then opened with appropriate religious exercises conducted by Rev. L. A. Bikle. The Institutejwas organized with an enrollment of thirty five members, bet many more are expected during the week. A committee on permanent organiza tion was appointed and reported as follows; Prof. J. P. Cook, superin tendent of public instruction of Ca barrus, president; J. A. Bivins, of Albemarle, secretary, and Prof E. F. Eddins, of Palmersville, and G. F. Barnhardt, of Mt, Pleasant, cor responding secretaries. The insti tute now being thoroughly organ ized the following preliminaries were agreed upon: Morning session opens at 8:30 aDd closses at 11:30. Afternoon session opens at 2 and closes at will, . The committee on programme consists of Superintend ent T. 0 . Jerome and Jr P, Cook, together with Profs. H. W. Spinks and H. T. J. Ludwig, gave an in terests g and instructive lecture on Arithmetic. Under fhe directions of superintendents and officers,, the teachers anticipate an entire success No labor or pains have been spared to make the necessary arrangements for the comfort and enjoyment of all present. We feel sure that the assembling of the teachers on this occasion must result in much good for the cause of education." We are elad to see the teachers of the two counties putting forth united effort in the direction so long needed, and could the citizens of our other coun ties see the interest manifested by the teachers there they would feel better assured as to the successful education of their children. All present, teachers and visitors take great interest in the work and seem to enjoy the occasion very mnch. We call attention to Secretary Ludwig's address "To Farmers and Others" on the first page, in refer ence to our County Agricultural and Mechanical Fair Association.. We hope every one will read it. This is a movement that interests every body in our county, and being just as it should be, under the supervi sion of our farmers its success is al ready a foregone conclusion. The inducement held out for almost ev ery one to become a member by the payment of the small fee of $L00 will, we hope, give the Association pecuniary support sufficient to put the fair grounds in good trim. First and foremost the interest of the far mer should receive recognition. It is through their success and prosper lty that the whole country prospers and it behooves each and every one to give awl.
