AH ooJi,; Oabaeedb Coustt. N. C. THURSDAY, MAY 2, 1895. James p. cook - - jiditob riVE YEARS OLD TODAY. . Today five years ago the Daily Standard mads its first appearance, It came out a four column affair. It was run for sport, fun and such lue for awhile, but since then we have been running it not for glory, but because it is a necessity and too good a thing not to run. It is highly appreciated in many homes, we haye reasons to believe ; and it is taken by some, who ap preciate it so much that they take i without allowing their consciences to lash them for not paying for it, There are others whose autographs are not on our mailing lists, that read it regularly, but there are those who rob subscribers of their papers and borrow thev are not worth anything to the town. The Daily Standard has alwayB been for Concord and Cabarrus; it has talked in season and out of sea son for every movement for the good of our own section and town. It has done all this for the love of them both. We have enjoyed the warm sup. port given it by the citizens of the town in subscnptons; and the lead irf merchants have liberally pat-, roc? red its advertising columns all th?.?3 ye highly appreciate. In this "cnnoctionwe desire to eay that the Teekly Standard has more reading matter in it than any country Weekly in the State, and its circula tion in Cabarrus county is larger than any paper that is read in the conntv. It aroeB for one dollar. If there be any that desire for distant friends to keep posted on the county, Thy come in and order the paper started. The Daily now enters Vol. XL 'e confidently expect the same jistronage as in the past, and hope to deserve it. A BAD DAY'S WORK. The making of a bond of $91,000 in this city yesterday in the case of an embezzling banktcashier for whom a bond of only $15,000 was needed, was a regrettable occurrence. No matter how charming his personal qualities, sight should never for a moment be lost ot the fact that this man is a criminal, and deserves the same sympathy and the aaiD.e' a. ishment, except in a mtTch larger degree, tht is measured out to the poor white man who steals a side of meat or the negro who steals a domi necker chicken. Men who have hova to raise need to have a care about how they palliate the crime of Ex-Cashier Holland, while those who have not should still remember that they owe the weight of their influence to the cultivation of a moral tone in soeiety, (charlotte gets a bad advertisement this morn ing in the statement to the world of the size of this bond, and any other trusted official who has the handling of the money of other people and who may be contemplating the ap propriation of a part of it to his own purposes will find great en couragement in this incident of yes terday in Charlotte. Charlotte Ob server. J)r readers are familiar with the knocking matter connected with the trial and convIBIHtJjJthe charge of raarder of Geo. Mills in Wake county some time ago. The Governor has be appealed to for executive clem eiicy. A commission of physicians is to examine into Mills sanity and report before the Governor acts on the petition, It would not look light to hang Geo. Mills. We be lieye him a victim of circumstances, Ihe making of which he could not govern or resist. Somebody, how ever, ought to be hanged and it looks like it might be a nearer rela-. tlve than George Children and fools tell everything; Mills ii doubtless iwJ latter, and we believe his story. You can say what you please, for people will do that io long as tongues are at their service, the Charlotte Observer is enterprising '"shores uborn." That extra, Mon day morning, telling "where. Holland is" just simply put people to breathi tDgeaaijry. There is something pitiful about Che winding np of the career ot that little negro, Bob Phifer. Of course ?;Htxyt, all j&gat do. t iinfiTn frrr running off, beating freight trains and the like modern fad until his craze put him into a box. . Woman's character has been likened to' a postage 4 stamp one tuck mark ra&s it , Man's like a treasury note no matter how many stainB it still passes at par. When a woman falls from grace her char acter "is usually ruined forever. While on the ether hand a man may straighten up be received into the best of society again. Ail of which is too true. He who 'speaks lightly and flip pantly concerning the cfcr-racter mi 6" virtue of a f ema'e, shames'Lir sister, dishonors his mother, and disgraces the uame of man . At the general election ten years hence every citizen will cast his vote by the simple touch of aa. eleciriu button and instantly the ballot is recorded, marked off the list and the result will be known to every man, woman and child throughout the country in less than lire minutes past the closing hour. They are now disputing abroad over the proper way in which to designate women who have secured a medical degree.- Some of the sug gestions are "doclorein," "physic ienne," "doctorine," "doctorina," and in case of married medic il wo men, J"doctora." Just let her alone and she will do her "doctorin' " and at the same time make a name for herself. Ro Cheap Your Kcad Swims. Jno. P Allison is offering bargains in canned gooas, regardless of cost. Jjook over the liefc of Leggetis and other first class brands : White Cherries, Kochester White Cherries, California Pineapples, diced & grate j Peaches Okra Apricots 5!b 20 Asparagus, Tips btnngless lieacs Strawberries. Mock Turtle Soup (linger Preserves (delicious) Jars. Some of these are less 45 than Packer's cost. From all reports of ExCashier Holland, it looks as if the citizens of Charlotte applauded his deeds of rascality and dishonesty, but the Observer of this morning points out some very truthful facta that are good to reflect upon. We print it elsewhere. The Show To-.i(;bt. It is with pleasure the Cab&rruj Black Boye announce tie appears ance at Armory Eal!, on TLursdiy night, May 2nd, of the famous Belie Bcyd, of Stonewall Jackso.i i-inl Shenandoah Valley fm in a asiatic narrative of her owt j.ar- ronal exploits and experiences and a company of up to date musical artists and comedians in tic Musical Bnletta, "The Actors Visit."
