CONCORD, AUGUST 5, 1896. C1JAIX OAKU AFFAIB. 'We had the satisfaction of near, ing the charges ; againgt.N Mr. H O Lefler ou Tuesday and in view of;the character of the witnesses and the utter failure to .fix any ap apparent crime on Mr. Lefler we are happy to know that the charges were not sustained. . In fact we fail to. see how the charges ever got be fore the county board r in ;; shape to merit a trial. ' ;, ;': ''-i:,y. Although Mr. W'L Parish was accorded the privilege of cross-ex r amining witnesses,-which was not accorded to any one' else in . the room, he persists in, denying that he was there as prosecutor. We do not hesitate to say that Mr. Lefler, as well as othet publio servants, should be held accounta ble for any abuse of power or deres t any indication of an irregu laxity to have two, three or four, chiefly young stripping culprits, to make charges abaiirb and monstrous against him, a man of settled char aster and good sterling citizenship. To our mind the ' trial did not reflect discredit on Mr. Lefler, but it savored of a degree of readiness to harbor, suspicion and calumny, on the flimsy gossip of a few ex-con victs that did not allow their pun ishment to effect any good for them. Those fellows should have J im proved under tneir punishment to avoid another lesson of that l or a worse kind It is very unfortunate too that such testimony should be believed against a respectable citizen until verified by those gentlemen whose testimony ezonorated Mr, Ltfler. Such testimony would doubtless have been given voluntarily and j have set the matter at rest without i the natural alienations that are apt to follow this stir-up. The inno cent suffer more or less from charges which they fully disprove. j .There is a better way of haying the sunshine of ; peace along- our pathway and of winning the esteem of our fellowmen. j, ' We would like to know who in Cabarrus county would be willing to have mV character measured by such testimony as was piven c there. We hope the rnstigaters of i this 7- "- ' r , . . . - . ' affair may never be endangered by such witnesses. " ."" DacKlen's Arnica eiaive.
