CONCORD. OCT., 20, 1896.
Iu tais campaign all of the fptir
candidates for the General Assembly
are farmers. Mr. Hileman is the
only on9 of the four that has been
conspicuous in politics. Of course
he feels less embarrassed in going
before the' people. He does not find
himself blushing, he is over that.
He has been an independent,' a i
Democratic nominee, a Populist and
we suppose is quite ready for any
otner party that may rise to do him
honor. He can speak, of course he
can. We heard him say in the cam
paign of '90, we think, that the Re
publicans have been in power twice
since the war and the Democrats '
once and he seemed to think when
he said it that he was saying some
thing. Of course with a havre-sack
full of such vagueness he is not in
want of something o say. But
when it comes- to good sound views
and legislative purity and ability,
our nbminess haye no need to feel any
diffidence- Mr. Barringer and Mr.
Nesbit go before the people with
records of enviable yeomanry and
eminent purity. If they don't make
the welkin ring with their eloquence
yoa'i find them firm for the right
and strong against any measure in
the legislature that would soil ' the
skirts of North Carolina's Virtue.
CYRUS B. WATSON WILL Witt
"Bob" Uleno Malces Oat the Real
- ; l.lne of JIattle.:
In a letter to the Raleigh News
and Observer, Hon. R B G een ex
presses himsellon the political situ
ation. The following is wh it he has
to sav: I
"Wbilesome seem diapered to
criticise harshly the action of our
Executive committee j in offering
complete fusion to the Popa lists, 1
believe . that wh n they have time
quietly to consider the matter, that
they all will agree with me, that the
proposition was one that com mebda j
itself to the best elements of both
the Democratic and Popolist parriep.
We have already fused on the
electoral ticket, the platforms of the
tvo parties on the questions of tariff,
the in come tax, trust and monopo
lies and finance being about the
same.
"Both parties are pledged to use
their best efforts to elect Mr. Bryan
and to see to it that he is supported
by a silver Congress. To do this, it
is necessary to send a silver delega
tion to the Honee of Representatives,
and to let no gold man be our next
Senator.
"Again, while we felt certain that
we could elect Mr. Watson Gover
nor, still we know the means the
Republicans were resorting to, by
illegal registration, of colored men
under age, who are not bona fide
residents, or sre exconvicts, and so
to avert even the possible change of
Russell and his gang controlling the
State, we offered the Populists hon
orable and fair fusion, giving them
half of the State offices and pledg
ing ourselves to elect Mr. Guthrie
United States Senator. Such a fu
sion would at least have kept the
State in the hands of the white peo
ple of the land, while now if we are
defeated, it passes under the control
of one, who e:ms frornihis spseche3.
to hate the best type of tru'e men.
In making the offer, the committee
has my hearty approval, and after
going all over the State, I believe, !
can truly say, it would have been
approved and endorsed by the better
class of both parties.
"AH thinking Populists know
that Mr. Guthrie can not be elected.
The race is . between Watson and
Russell, Candid as he always is,. I
feel assured, Mr. Guthrie himself
j -
will admit this, and if his people
vote, so as to elect Mr. Russell then
the odium of such an election must!
fall on them. It is useless to say
the Democrats should have taken
down their; ticket, for onehas only
to look at the vote of 1892 and 1894,
to see what was and is the strength
of the two parties, and 'every candid
mind will say our committee's offer
was pre-eminently fair, j They were
to have Lieutenant-Governor, Secre
tary of State, Treasurer! (these the
two best offices,) Supreme Court
Judge, four Congressmen and the
United States Senator, .and we the
Governor, Auditor, Attorney&ener
aii Superintendent of Poublio In
struction, five Congressmen and one
Supreme Court Judge and one Su
perior Court Judge. J
"Our offer being rejected, we will
make the fight, believing that our
people will never allow i Kussell to
succeed. The registration is heavy,
and shows if we do our duty and
work we can and will win. Let all
men in the State, who desire to see
our State government left in safe
hands, rally to the support of v Mr.
Watson and elect him by a hand
some majority.
"Very truly yours,
j "R. B. GLENN.
