Our ' Republican friends take advantage of us: and discuss it from h their standpoint. We like to give, every one credit for candor, but they cer tainly are. unfair when they lead people to believe the .McKinley tariff brought prosperity and that the election of Cleveland and the Wilson bill was the start of the de pression 1 of ; business.: Wei think there is no probability that the Democrats would ever have gotten possession of the government if the workings of the McKinley bill had . not prpveiXitl to be; a disastrous policy. ; : . There are those like Mr. E C Holdt whose judgment of free coinage will not let them, vote for Mr. Bryan, but their observations of McKinley ism are too unfavorable to allow them to vote that ticket. So in the .. exercise of the responsible preroga tive of voting they cast their ballots not to be on' the beating side, but as their conviction would dictate, just as if it were the winning ticket Mr. .Cunningham, who is now , conspicuously before v the public as offering to raise the wages . of his 20 moulders and other - necessary bands for turning out 50 stoves per day; says the Wilson bill affords protection enough and that; higher tariff tWU$f tjml "to: beet, more poSerfiff txtisufc' ; ; ' Itfdbcs liitteteojodUdcom plain ofj trusts while we foster them with high-tariff... ; Southern . cotton manufacturers seeoa to prosper without protection. AU they want is for somebody to be prosperous enough to buy their productions. This seems to -show that the cry about the- danger, of competition from the half clad pau per labor of the world is not reality and is Known to be false by those who would misjead. ' WILl MR. UUtttBIE WITHDRAW. The Charlotte Observer : sounded the bugle call to Mr. Guthrie.; The Standard and many of our ex the 8 train and we changes , took up hope that the mountain ecbos will reach to ocean billows and Mr. Guthrie will heed the call and give us a clear gubernatorial sky on the 3rd of November. What could be more devoutly i politic and more wished for,; more ad vantgous to him self and all lovers of pood govern ment than for him to withdraw from the race in favor of his personal friend and his genial political opponent Mr. C B Watson. . j THE MOXEY l'LASK. For a few days we find some dis- . - - .i i cussion has arisen about the wording of the money plank in the Chicago platform. We reprint today that which differences paragrapn upon seem to have arizen. It will be seen to be very clear j and unmistakable in its tone. Here is the paragraph : "We demand the free and unlimit ed coinage of both silver and gold at the present legal! ratio of 16 to 1 without waiting for the aid or con sent of any othe nation. YVe de mana that the; standard silver dol lar shall be fall legal tender, equally with gold, for all debts, public and private, and we favor such legislae tion a8.wi.ll prevent for the future the demonetization of any kind of legal tender, money by private contract". s NO INTIMIDATION. - The fear seemed to exist that the convictions of some of our larga emu ployers was so strong as to carry some intimidation among employes too.dependent upon their daily; wages tor take any risk of being offensive by yoting their preferences, j Such we-think is not, and never has been thecase; in our midst. We are reliably assured that Mr. J W Can non while very strongy in favor of the , McKinley ticket, , has assured his employes that their voting their choice ' of tickets shall have no prej udical effects against them. We are informed from most trustworthy source that Mr. j W R Odell does not hesitate; to say" that while he would like his employes to see the issue as he does , that no coercion will be practiced on any one. Men of extensive business capicty can generally be relied upon for broad mindedness enough to V take proper views and act with exalted motives. ; , ' - CAN THEY VOTE. - . r " 1 : Today is challenge day , and next Saturday is the time to decide challenged claims. Suppose there are many cases and the closing: hour comes without the cases all decided; what about them ? Of course atl will vote. who are registered unless declared not entitled to registration. It will be easy to cause trouble with evidence - so that the time may be whiledaway and! the work left in complete. Oflft 4 Any sarsaparilla is sarsapa- rilla. True. So any tea is tea, . So any flour is flour. But grades differ. You want tlie best, . r It's so with sarsaparilla. There are grades. You want the best. If you understood sarsaparilla as well as you- do tea and- flour it would be easy ; to determine.: But you don't. . How hould -' you?. When, you are going to buy a commodity whose value " you don't know, you pick out an old established house ' to trade with, and trust their ex perience and reputation. Do so when buying sarsaparilla. Ayer's Sarsaparilla has been on the market o vears. S Your grandfather used' Ayer's.' It is' a reputable medicine. - There are many Sarsaparillas bat only1 one Ayer's. It cures. 4 1 1 K. L.
