Vol. XIII.. No. 184 A SNAKE WITH LEGS. CONCOllTJ, N. C., MONDAY. NOVEMBER 23, 1896. -: "Whqlb NO. Stanly production Proved an At traction in M. Pleasant Testimony Corrolorntive-A NnnKo That May yet jiavc a Oreat Repntatlon-Dedi-cated to Col. Olds. Mr. Editor : On the 18th of this month I saw a snake in Mt. Pleas ant. I went down with a minister and goon after getting there H saw the snake, hence there is no room for delasion or suspicions of attack in which snakes and such things seem to be a stock in trade. The snake was dead having been killed by Mr. Giles, the son of a Methodist minister,' on his way from Norwood, Stanly county, to Mt. Pleasant. You know ! when snakes are seen, they are of the liv ing and business kind. 1 My snake is a dead one another evidence of no delusion. - . R . ', The snake in question is possess ed of some peculiarities of such a character that science or something else would be cheated did . not his Boakeship's oddities find -way -into public print. Really-1 helitate - to say much about this snake, because of so many doubting 'iThomases some people are so foolish as to doubt snake and fish -stores. -But the character of those, who testify to the accuracy of my description will be enough to remo ve alldoubts Vlid any arise in this case. Feeling that we all owe to science, history, etc., every effort possible to keep mankind well up-to-date" and in touch with changes and. new de velopments ; I risk' my ' life in re lating about a snakethat I saw.r on the 18th. j " " Here goes: The snake was "dead ; I examined him, her or -it;. the snake was 6 feet 7 inches long; 4 inches in circumferance at the larg eat place ; head was as black ' as a crow'a feathers; and the color faded gradually, as you went from head to tail, into dark 'rusty brown,? light brown and to a whitish green ; the skin was marked by creases whose outlines, made dia? m:nd fhurea. ' . s About two feet from its tail there were two well developed legs of oyer one inch in length and the same being one-halt inch in diameter. O a each leg were feet or toes, on the ends of which were nails resembling cat claws. The claws I did not count, but on each foot there were too claws, or nails, one-quarter of an inch long and they were as sharp as briars and as hard as bone. I .testify that the above account is absolutely correct. Signed. W S Hartseil, L R Rose, M D , A W Moose, Mayor and J P.; J H C Fisher, Prof. Math. Mont Amceaa Seminary, M L-Buchanan, Sheriff elect. If the snake can be secured from the party who has it, it will be sent to the Raleigh Museum. In the meantime this is dedicated to my most esteemed and charming friend Col. Fred Olds, of .Raleigh. J.
