Grades In Our Navy.
The average citizen is much
more familiar with the grades in
army than with those in the navy.
The army mingles more with the
people than the navy, whose repre
sentatives are seldom eeen except
in our seacoast cities, but is well io;
understand what the grades in th
navy are., j
There were no admirals or vice-
admirals in our navy until the civil I
war. These grades were created
then as rewards for distinguished
naval service, just as the ranks of
general and lieutenant general were
established for distinguished ser
vice in the army. . j
The United States have bad but
two admirals, first, David G Farra
gut, and then David D Porter; only
three vice admirals. Farragut, Porter
and Andrew H Foote. . .1
The rank of rear admiral has ex
isted ever since the establishment
of our navy, as has the rank of
major general in our army. The
ranks in the navy and the army
correspond as follows:
Navy.
Admiral
Vice admiral.
Rear admiral.
CommodoreT
Captain.
Commander.
Liet. commander
Lieutenant.
Ensign
Arm v. f
General
Lieut. General.
Major General.
Brig. General.
Colonel. ;
Lieut, colonel.
Major. 1
Captain.
Lieutenant.)
Even when we had an admiral of
the navy and ageneral of the army
they did not command tne entire
army and navy except under the
direction of thepresident who under
the constitution, is the commander-in-chief
of both. . !
The naval officers or highest
xank has command of the fleet j or
squadron with which he is present,
just as the ranking 4 army officer
commands the troops with whom
he is in the field or in camp. I
The sea forces of the United
Stales consists, first, the entire
-navy ; coond, a fleet; third, a squad
ron; fourth, single vessels, accord
to their size and power. A real
admiral commands a fleet, as a
major general commands a division.
.A commodore commands a squad
ron, as a brigadier general commands
brigade. A captain commands a
ship of theJargest size, as colonel
commands a regiment.. Command
ers command vesels of the second
v class and the officers of minor rank
have appropriate commands down
to tb!e smallest craft in the navy.
In the absence of rear admirals
commodores command fleets1 and
squadrons. The command ofinayy
yard corresponds to the command
of army departments. Atlanta

It is remarkable that some of the
j j ' - i .
newspapers have it that Rear Ad
miral SampFon's bombardment of
San Juan resulted in silencing the
enemy's guns and of effec ing a sar
render, while it appears from the;
Associated Press that the bombard
ment lasted for three houis with
little (ffeG the Spanish even claim,
ing a victory , Itlooks too inuch
like Spanish silliness to magnify an
i tie ffectual be mbard ment into a grand
victorious achievement.

and was absolutely cured by j Dr.

in comparison with this marvelous
cure; would nave it, even if it cost
a hundred dollars a bottle. Asthma,

In his modest recitals of the de
tails of one of the greatest naval
victories of model times Dewey
did not forget to mention that! all
possible was being done for the
sick and wounded Spaniards. In
this he showed not only that); he
was humane, but that he appreci
ated the tact that his countrymen
would wish this news, as well as
the news of the great victory.

Remenyi, the Famous Violinist Bead
The Hungarian violinist, Ee
menyi, is dead. He died on Sun
day afternoon while performing
on his yiolin to a vast audience in
the Orphenm Theater. This man
had a wide reputation and has
held some of the finest audiences
almost spell bound, as he was; do
ing when he dropped down in the
theater. He was playing at his
his best and suddenly he fell for
ward, but fortunately was caught
by his accompanist. j !
Doctors were called at once to
his assistance but could Ieiid- no
aid, as it was only a short time
until the life of this famous, world
known musician was at its end.
