A New York dispatch of June 30th says : "The Southern Rails Tray , Company has acquired the property and franchise of theVir pinia Midland Company. The Southern Railway; owned substan tially all the capital stock of the Virginia midland and has hereto fore operated the property under lease The Southern has also ac quired the property and franchises of the Knoxville, Cumberland Gap & Louisville Company, extending from Knoxville to Cumberland Gap irith trackage rights over about five mile? of the Louisville & Nash ville between Cumberland Gap and Middleboro, Ky. ' If this war should display unusual heroism in battle it need not be surprising. The men of the North . and the South now under the Scars and Stripes will naturally rival eacn omer in marKs of loyalty. The negro troops 1 . 1 ml will naturally feel some ambit lion to make a good showing of their fighting qualities, and the Cubans have many incen tives to be unwilling to be surpassed. There are rarely so many combinations to iead to brilliant battle deeds. Caught Fir From thefUove Flneand Bnrned to the Oround--Nearly Ev erything in the Ilonse Saved The llaru at Key. llarley's Also Barns to the Groand. Today (Monday) about 12 30 the fire alarm was son tided aud he peo ple were seen running out of the business houses inquiring for the place, but at first little was known. It was found to be a.dweiiing to the eaBt of Forest Hill, and to the east of Simpson street. Mr. Ohas. A Suther was living in the house, but the dwelling belongs to Esq. Jno. A Barnhardt "who lives out in No. 5 township. The fUmea were first detected in the stove flue j Fortunately the family, by the aid of the neighbors, succeeuea in geiiing everyuning out, nearly except the cook stove. The people turned out; in crowds i ? a . ; J. from the mills, but the flames bad gained control of the house too well to save it, but their aid helped won derfolly to" save the adjoining house, which woald ?ery probably have B&rned bad it not been for the wind blowing in an opposite direc tion. 'The hoHsehold things in sey eral of the ad j nhing houses were strewn out upon the ground. No insurance was carried on the building. The dwelling contained four rooms and is valued at about $300. The " house had been built only about six months. Scarcely had we finished writing the above account until a second alarm was given, and the people vwere again called to Forest Hill. This time it was found to be the barn of Rev. G G Harley ion North Church street.- The barn belongs to the Concord circuit of the Metho dist church. Fortunately Rev. Harley succeded in saving his horse and boggy, but his harness and all of h is corn and roughness we: e burned. : Fortunately the wind blew from the west and endangered no house Had it not been for this, probably the dwelling house of Rev. Harley would have caught fire. The smoke- house, which was near the barn, would have caught fire, but was torn down and dragged away by the people. As to the cause of the fire, nothing is known. No one suspects it to have been set oh firs. When first noticed the flames had started in the loft. Insurance was carried on the dwelling, but there was none on the barn. To'lay Monroe July 12th.
