On Thursday afternoon Police
man Harris was .informed that
David Hannan, a man wnOse
" i j
name haB appeared in this paper
several times wheu he would
openly violate the law, was beat
iug his horse unmercifully. Mr.
Harris promptly ' went to I his
house; near the depot and; saw
things as they really were. This
man was beating his horse oyer
the head and body, not with; a
whip, but with a club. Mr. Har
ris attempted to take the horse
I if ;
and hitch it and also to arrest Mr;
Hannan. Mr. Hannan miidei ai
break for the policeman and: had
. " ' . ' ; j i i i
succeeded in getting his hands

well on him. After ecuffling, a!
short while Mr. Harris pulled his
"billy" on the man and was com-;
pelled to hit him a good blow be-
' ,: " pi
foro ho would give up. Even; the
three children were taking their
lather's part, and one, the small
boy, had the axe in Lis hand and
was coming toward Mr. Harris
His case, was heard before
Mayor Crowell, and in default of
a $75 bond for his appearance at
next couri he was taken to jail. I
Only a.; short while - ago hia
three small children were about
to be taken from him on account
of his negligent caro of them, but
the separation has now been
made. They were taken to jthe
county fionie that evening, where
they will be cared for. 1
Mr. Hannan's head was hurt
somewhat by Mi. Harris blow,
but nothing eerious will result.
Mr. Harris has only been out of
bed a short while, and had he' not
used his weapon when he did it is
very probable, he says, that the
man . would have gotten the better
of him. -
