Written for The Staudard. damp Columbia, near Havana, Jan. 13, 1899. Having seen an item copied from the press dis patches in the home papers, I take it upon myself o contradict, the statement1 that there arr any cases of smallpox in onr regiment or among the Seventh Army Corps', and thV North Carolina regiment ia ndt quarantiaed from 'Havana or Eur roondiDg territory. There was a aoppqatd case of smallpox in the Indiana regiment, bat it wa3 a faked up case, and no quarantine waa established. Those 'who have friends and relatives here need feel no uneasiness on account of the dread pestilence up to the preeent writitig. " There are some cases of smallpox in the southern parjt of Ouba, but the infected districts are far from where we are located. . H P Denton.
