These Are Dog-Days.
Many a young boy about th e time
lie commences to go in swimming
in the summer experiences being
told that he must not go in the
water if he has any sores on his
"body as it is dog-days. All have
heard the expression but for
iear many do not know the
origin of the expression and the
time of their beginning, we pub
lish what is taken from Spof -ford's
Encyclopaedia : ' 'It is the
name applied by ancients to a
period of about' forty days, the
hottest season of the year, at
the time of the heliacal rising of
Sirius. sometimes called the dog
.star. The time of rising is now, t
owing to the' precession of the
equinoxes, different from what
it was to the ancients (July 1st)
and the dog-days are now
counted from the 3rd of July to
August 11, that is, twenty days
before and twenty days after the
heliacal i rising. At this time
persons are more careful as to
any wounds on their body as
water sometimes tends to irritate
them.
Their Commissions Receiyed.
The commissions as officers in
the State Guard have been re
ceived by the captain, Mr. Edward
Hill, and the first lieutenant. Mr.
Eli Goldston. The second lienten-;
ant s position is open, Mr. Jas. F
Goodman having resigned. The
commissions are the same as was
issued to these officers on the1
16th day of November, 1896, ex
cept that this company is now

the recent service.

I wish to say that I feel under
lasting obligations for what
Chamberlain's Cough remedy has
done for our family. We have
used it in so many cases of
coughs, lung: troubles and whoop

the most peffect satisfaction, we
feel greatly indebted to the manu

them to please accept oui hearty
thanks. Respectfully, Mrs. S

WORKING ON TAXES.
The Value of Some of the Property
Decreased Tp Examine the Treasur
er's Books More Bills Paid--A Gift to
to the Firemen.
;. On Monday and Tuesday the
county commissioners were kept
busy listening at the complaints
made by different parties as to the
valuation of their property. In
quite a number of cases after
careful investigation the valua
tion was decreased and in a few
cases the value Was raised. Quite
a number gave their returns,
having failed to return while the
lists were in the hands of the
listtakers.
Robert E. Gibson and John P.
Allison were appointed a com
mittee to examine, the books of
the county treasurer.
Five dollars was contributed
by the county to the Concord
Hose and Reel company. ' This
was a gratuitous payment.
Several persons had failed to
present their bills as listtakers
and assessors and were paid
their amounts, which amounted
to about $50.00.
It is a busy time now in
Register Johnson's ' office. He
and his assistants will be kept
busy working on the taxes.
They have all of them to com
pute and have ready for the
sheriff the first of September.
We Ar,e Found Wanting Again.
The Union boys seem to have
been fully prepared to meet our
baseball team this- week and
must necessarily have done some
good work on the diamond. Our
boys have been gaining victories
with a f &w exceptions but the
tide turned on us when they
struck, these South Carolinians.
They are
finer than, the Cheraw
lgh, and we hear scTf ar
boys, tho
no complaints as to the umpire
but simply hear from-the score,
which in Tuesday's game re
sulted in 15 to 4 against us.
Their Young Child;Dead.
At this period hr the year sick
ness of infants' is" especially
prevalent, and already numbers
of parents of our county have
been made said by the death of
their last-born. Today (Wednes
day) Mr', and Mrs Chas. P. Cald
well, of No. 2 township, parted
with their 18 -months old child.
It will be buried at Poplar - Tent.
Death Caused by Lightning.
One day last week, near Fay-
etteville, Andrew Murdock and
two mules were instantly kiUed by
lightning. Thiy ' b aid taken shelter
under a tree during a storm. An
other man was badly hurt also
ana will probably not recover.

GILES PEARSON CAPTURED.
He Left Concord On Short Notice-But Is
Captured In South CarolinaGoing
About Under a Different Name.
Several months ago the cash
drawer from the w safe of the
Fenix roller milV was taken out
and a considerable amount of
money was gained by the thief,
which proved to ; be the small
boy of Giles Pearson, colored.
The boy is in jail, having been
captured at Haile Gold Mine
some time ago by Ex-Chief of
Police Boger. ' Giles Pearson,
the boy's father, is accused of
receiving the' money the boy
stole and of concealing it.
The fact that Giles failed to
show up at the last term of
court as a witness in the case
makes it look still worse for him.
Ex-Chief Boger has had his eye
on the negro for, some time and
brought him here Tuesday night.
The negro1 had been at Haile
Gold M ine, S. C. , until about
the middle of last month when
he went to Gaffney, where last
Sunday he was : arrested by an
officer there and, held until Mr.
Boger went- after him. Since
giving Concord the dodge Giles
has been using the name of Rev.
G. W. Henerson in that county
and has received mail so ad
dressed. He is now in jail
awaiting his fate at the hands' of
the Superior court. ?
