To thfe Honorable Board of Coun ty Commissioners: Gentlemen fTh campaign for GoodRoads in North Caro lina has reached the stage where we must either go forward or backward. The recent Conven tion of Good Roads advocate at Ralsigh brought together repre sentative men from every part of the State, who with one ac cord agree that Good Roads in North Carolina are a vital neces sity. The great difficulty con fronting us is to discover the means whereby they may be se cured. The object of the North Carolina Good Roads Association is to promote the interests of bet ter public roads in every county in North Carolina and in this while the movement is before he people, and with concerted effort we carmot fail to accom plish a w'onderful wor for the upbuilding 'of the State. At the forthcoming session of the legis lature, through the efforts of tfiis Association, we shall hope to be in shape to present a prac tical and desirable- Road Law which will benefit every town ship in every county in North Carolina in the matter of public roads. I hope your Board will favor- ably consider this matter at its next meeting; any 'delay means an abatement of interest which will detract from the success of the undertaking. The money may be sent to our treasurer, Mr. Joseph G Brown, the presi dent of the Citizens' Natianal work we ask the co-operation of Bank, at Raleigh, N. An un known white man was instantly killed late this afternoon by a freight train on the Carolina & Northwestern Railroad on Smyre's trestle, two miles from here. The only paper found on his person was a letter from D T McKeithan, of the Bridgers & McKeithan Lumber Company, of Lumber, S, C, , telling him toj come and take a job. The name the dead man was cut out of the letter by the wheels. When he saw the train approaching him on the trestle the unfortunate, i man made a desperate effort to reach the end of the trestle and seeing that he c ould not do so he threw himself squarely under the approaching Otra:u was literally ground to piaces. An inquest was held to night and a verdict in accordance with these facts renderd. It is sel dotn a death occurs on this road and it is coincidence that this accident occurred at the same point where, eleven years ago this month, seven people met their death in a wreck. The dead man was about 25 years of age, medium size and height and black hair. KW m m S m m m m m .m MM N m n m e 8 have heen on the market for 25 years. For 20 years this Shoe sold for $3.00.
