Thirty million of our popula
tion is living under prohibitory
laws.
The editor of the Presbyterian
Journal says that a 'proposition
to open the saloons on Sunday
could have emanated from pro
fessed moralists is a significant
straw showing the loss of old
'time reverence for God's day.
Six hundred and seventy per
sons took the temperance pledge
during the past year at The
Philadelphia Sunday Associa

tional church."
President Angell, of the Uni

' The Burlington R. R. officials
have long prohibited the use of
intoxicans among their em

use of intoxicants by employees
while on duty is prohibited or
the frequenting of places where
they are sold is sufficient cause
for dismissal."
There were 50,000 arrests for

DISTUESS IN TEXAS.
Precious SouTOitir of Battle of Seven
Tines.
. Miss Mary Louis Harris is the
proud recipient of a button found
by Rev. Cochran Preston on the
battle field of Seven Pines. It is
a Virginia button worn and
doubtless lost by a Virginia sol
dier in that great battle nearly
40 years ago. . Mr, Preston, had
a pin put to it and Miss Harris
now wears it as a hat pin and
prizes it more than if it were a
gem of sparkling hue.
Jhe People of Zapata County In a Most
Deplorable Condition.
.Lerado, Tex., April 3. Judge
McLane and District Attorney
Hamilton, who have returnod
from Carizzo, where they went
to hold a term of the district
court for Zapata county, are re
ported to have declared that the
people of that county are in a
most deplorable condition and
that some relief must bo given
to benefit their situation. Judge
McLane is quoted as having said:
"There is no fodder for the
horses and corn was 5 cents a
pound (Mexican money). The
stock are nearly all dead and
what are still living are so poor
they can scarcely walk. Tho
water holes are nearly all dried
up will last but a few weeks
longer, and when tho water fails
what stock is left will not live a
week. 'We traveled 140 miles '
9
said tho judge, 'and in 'that dist
ance did not see enough grass
to fill one's hat. Nothing has
been grown in the county for
two years. Those who have a
few cattle left are unable to even
pay their taxes. The people
have planted nothing this year
and are utterly without hope.'"
