C.r May. 23, 1902 Tiam TO LOOK OUT FOR GOOD MEN It becomes necessary -for thVuVttfiil patriotic mei to cast about f or; some" good men for our public offiees to be' 1 elected in ' November. , As ?to a" nUmberybf the better paying county offices it'wiil be simply a choice among a number of candidates, who de. sire these offices for the dignity, the emoluments and the seeming happiness they afford as com pared with the average avoca tionin life. There are two classes of officers, however, that carry with them little emolument, very much liability to criticism. and a -weight of responsibilty that only men above the average of intel ligence and discretion can afford to assume. We have reference to the leg islature and the board of -county commissioners. For those, qualified to fill tjaem the service must be rendered a a sacrifice. Therefore we have grown out of the habit of "run ning" for these offices and it be comes a matter of consideration as to who can be had to' render this service. Most certainly the man who has not qualifications that he is willing to bestow for the best interests of the presen and future generations can ho render ideal service and should i 9 i be avoided. The tickling of per sonal pride and power, so hard to avnid in the average man, is to be discredited. . With all these incentives to . modesty and retirement there is a conscious fitness and ability in men who ' possess them. With ; all the weaknesses of humanity 'there are'men who know and .know that they know, and know ing the importance of filling these offices with good men it is no less than a -duty and a priyi; lpge to . tender their service in a modest way, or not decline when asked to serve. . : Wo want gooJ men, well in formed on these lines and the quicker we give consideration to the matter the. better. r Tot Causes Kight Alarm.
