Familiar, yet containing an element of distress, to be heard, but could not be seen. So an investigation was start ed and by following the rounds the cat was located in the 'well; floundering about and giving forth wail after. wail, Uncle Mose, as he is familiarly known throughout this section, let the bucket down, the cat promptly got on it, and it was brought to surface with a death grip on the bucket. H E Buck-r len ds Co;, Philadelphia and St . Louis. z:'iirr '?grSfg:fy&: A DEER CHASE WEDNESDAY MIGHT A Bfg Back with Antlers Seen a Few Ullss of Towo - . Wednesday afternoon a number of citizens' who life about f two miles northwest of this place were surprised to see a fine specimen of deer, a big buck with antleri, grazing abcut in the neighborhood. It was last esen nearv Charles Me niua' tnd was frightened away. Word was passed around and quite a crowd, possibly tweijty-fiva or thirty men ' with numerous dogs, went in search for it; The hunt ers started, about j five o'clock and the crowd increased rapidly. Beside those in the neighborhood others came from Landis and China Grove, but the deer easily avoided them. Finally the dogs started something and did consid erable running, but no one ever got near enough to see just what the dogs were following. The chase continued until 10 or 11 o'clock and was abandoned without meeting with any success . It is said some deer traoks have since been seen in an old field and, be ing some ten or twelve feet apart, indicating that it was doing a marathon in the speed line. The appearance of a deer in these parts is something extraordinary and would have been out of the . usual fifty years ago. Among those who took part in the ohase were the following: Elijah Miller, Preston Linn, James Rice, W. H. Bostian, Hemy G. Roie, B. J Be stian, B. 0.' . Kimball, H. Q. Miller and others. Directers of the Pattersoa Uaoafactariog Cespaa) Ueet. .There was regular meetin of the Patterson Manufacturing Com- paay in cue cmse ox tne company of the company were gjne over and everything; was found to be in splendid shape under the capable direction of Superintendent Swmk and his able assistants. A five per cent, dividend was declared and checks were drawn and mailed to the stockholders. Those present at the meeting were Dr. M. L. Stevens, of Ashe villej A. L. Patterson, of Albe marle; M. M. Hanna, .read a most interesting history of the cjDb since its organization on April 1st, 1907. Another interesting feature of the afternoon, was tne guessing contest entitled "Some Book Men," in wmcn tne nrss prize, a pocket direotory, was won by Mrs. B. W. Qray. while the booby, two candles, fell to the lot of Mrs MoL. Kitohie. All the members were present and one new one added, Mrs. J. Bf Eillian. Since they have ' been . in strumental in having quite a nnmber perform this duty, it is but fair play for them to take a tarn at the job. Such an outing may temper their ' judgments : in the future.. Think of these gen tlemen sticking to the iob- for thirty days. v. A test cue recently went up to the s upreme court from ; Winiton Salem in regard tothe .matter of a ' division of .-they ooutity . sohool funds in helping-to bditd the city school buildings. Heretofore the cities have always provided; at their own expense, the public school buildings and got .nothing from the oounty funds of which they pay the greater part, while the schools in the rural distriots were granted assistance upon ' re? queBt. The decision handed down changes this and it is now possible for the cities to demand a fair portion .f the public school building funds. We notice quite a number of our exchanges in sneaking of Ex Governor Jarvis hay ing been treat' ed for an ulcer on his hand, state that he filled out ithe unexpired term of Senator Vance and the following 'term to ; which he was' eleoted. This is an error,' he merelf served a few month by appointment. Jeter 0. Pritohard was eleoted to I fill1 out ' Senator Vance's term and was eleoted to the following term which ' expired March 8, 1903. The work of completing the new xji.anairsrit i8 Baid tn appearance of the in terior-is very . satisfactory. As some of the floors fell while being constructed we are not able to say that sabstantiability is one of the good qualities of the said building. Of course we.will never knowvany better until the record crowd has been safely supported. Let us hope there will not be a catastro phe to record on. this score. Nu merous porous and discolored stone remain in the walls and as time passes these disoolorations will be more pronounced than now, with all the experts testimo ny to the contrary. This building is a monument to the greatest in justice that has ever been perpe trated in North Carolina, the most dastardly and contemptable piece of official tyranny that has taken place in the Scuthsince the war, it denotes the complete sujugation of the onoe glorious Damooracy to a gang of grafters, crocks and dee eorators of popular rights.- In ad dition to the numerous irregulari ties, indifference and stupidity displayed in connection with this work, one of the three commis sioners who oompose the majority of the board, is permitted, contra ry to 'law. to remain on this board, pass on the material brought from his quarry and vote the people's money into his own pocket, and the other commission era wno nave votea wiin ni man, though Jhey may not be fi nanoialiv interested, cannot es cape the charge of being accesso ries to the crimes, likewise others who have aided and abetted in the matter. Our. people are exceed ingly patient and slow to anger, but when they do move the guilty had better niH be too conspicuous. The last legislature is said to have passed a law forbidding the sale, killing and shipment of oalves under six months old;: This law Js of interest to dairymen, butchers and tne general pupiio, but will not acoomphsh much good for the reason that it is not sufficiently profitable. 4 o raise beef.oattle in this section. : It is now'a common things ta immedi ately kill a calf rather than .at tempt to care for it even until it becomes salable as veal. Of course this proceeding was for effect, but it was not very effective except on the gentleman in question The average Negro, for the small sti pend'of one and a quarter bucks, would have accomplished consid erably more, but if the governor really wanted to do something he should have gotten a traction en gine and a road scraper . and (ro ceeded in a way that really would have turned the triok .
