Ml p'"sHERRlL'. Editor and Publisher. PUBLISHED U O N D A Y S AND THUR SD AY"s XLII. CONCORD, N.C MONDAY, OCTOBER. 1910 lilt4 n i m - - STEAMER TORPEDOED WITHOUT A WARNING cTEAMER MARINA SENT TO THE BOTTOM. II! IS PICKED ND LANDED PRESIDENT MAKING GAINS ACCORDING TO STRAW VOTE Wilson Shows Gain of One Per Cent. And Hughes Loss of One And One- Tenth Per Cent. The New -York Herald's political canvass published yesterday, shows a neek-and-neck race as the poll is near ed in the Presidential race. The Her ald's summary of the results of its work -follows: Entered upon its final lap the race for the Presidency is still a neck and neck contest. The President has been making gains in The "Herald National straw vote, but the Republicans assert that the Wilson tide reached its highest point several days ago and now is falling, off. In the total vote published yester day "President Wilson shows a gain of one per cent and Mr. Hughes shows a loss of one and one-tenth per cent. During the week the President made gains, large and small, in 18 States. Mr. Hughes made gains in eight. . There were no important changes in the totals from nine States. In Now York city the President gained. Up State, Mr. Hughes made advances. The drift during the week was un questionably in the President's di rection. In the opinion of both Re publicans and Democrats, the cam paign hung on a dead center several days ago. The Republicans declare that since that time the swine: has. been in their direction. The Demo crats do not contend that there has been a continuation of the marked dr ft of two weeks ago, but feel con fident that the strong current driving in their direction up to the time there came a lull was sufficient to overcome any backdrift which may be started by the Republicans. Whatever change in the situation may have followed the turning point in the campaign yid all the leaders agree that the battle reached its cli max a few - days ago might not be apparent in the straw vote tabulation of this dae. It will, however, be caught in the canvass that is beinsr made at this time and which will be continued" until the spectacular con test draws to a close.
