Friday evening at 7 :45, in Raleigh, occurred the death of Mr. R. T. Gowan. a thirty-two degree Mason, prominent in B. & L. work, and at the time of his death Mr. Gowan was chief took keeper in the main office of the North Carolina Home Insurance Company. Mr. Gowan was less than fifty years of age, possessing a pleasing personal ity. His, death was sudden, as the result of apoplexy. For a number of years, during his young manhood Mr. Gowan lived in Concord, making his home at the St James Hotel, now the residence of Dr. Houston. While living here he was employed at tbe Southern Railway offices, associated with the late Mr. Gowan Dusenbery In the conduct of the local railroad business. Store Destroyed By Fire. Fire Saturday night at 9 o'clock de stroyed Brown Bros. Store at Flowe's Store. One of the owners of the store was pouring gasolene in a five-gallon tank from a 100 gallon tank, when the small tank caught on fire, supposedly from. a lantern which a small boy, was holding so as to make light. The two was pouring gasolene into a five-galhi minutes the entire interior of the store was burning. An effort was made to put out the blaze, but it was unsuc cessful, and not only was the building destroyed, but most of the goods were burned also. Mrs. P. B. Bost owned the building and carried $150 insur ance. The stock of goods were valued at about $2,500. on which there was $1,000 insurance. In some case as much as 11 1-2 cents a bushel was slashed fnun values, the Decemler delivery at one time bringing only $t.55 as against $2.07 to $2.07 1-2 at the finish on Sat urday. Increased liquidation by the holders was in progress, especially from rural sources.
