As a member of the famous old “Cineo” aggrega tion, more than a decade ago, Cline's ability to push tin* apple over the corner resulted in more than one close victory for Ihe representatives of the five-eent smoke. “Watch me hit that rat," said Campbell Thursday afternoon as Xebuchadnezzer, Blue Ribbon rot lent of the composing room staff, made a surreptitious appearance on one of the pipes near the ceiling in the press-room. “Two to one you can't,” yelled Jess McLellan, composing room fore man, who had- seen old ".Yeb," as the pesr was called for short, survive too many near-deaths to believe (bat j he would succumb to tin* marksman- ! ship of the forme* pitcher. Cabarrus county is in the throes! of the worst epidemic of measles in j the history of this section, medical j and health forces combining efforts to check the scourge. New cases of measles have been developing at the average of 17 each day during me past ten days, a tabulation of health records showing that 170 cases have appeared in less than two weeks. Showing the widespread attack of I the disease, the IS cases reported' Friday are in more than a dozen mt-j ferent communities of the county. The health authorities of Cabarrus have gbeen waging war against meas les since early summer, and each week hats seen increased effort. Failure j of mothers and fathers to respect j quarantine by allowing children to frequent places in contaet with the disease is given credit to the spread of the malady. The personnel of the t aoarrus Health department has been kept on the alert without any rest in visiting homes where measles have developed and posting quarantine placards as well as giving thorough instructions as to the care of the patients. Idleness ami Crime. Judge Jolm Montgomery Oglesby, riding circuit in the western part of the Slate, is being heard from quite frequently in the press reports and on the editorial pages. His declar ation about the drunk man with the shotgun and the drunk,-man with the automobile had what the late Tom Evans would called "legs." Il is traveling about. Another declaration just forthcoming is one weighted down with wisdom. It is bong exploited in The ('uncord Tribune and is of a nature which should command thought. Judge Oglesby makes note of the fact that nobody who has steady employment has been in his court on charge of stealing, or of vio lating the prohibition law. His con clusion is that work is a preventive of crime, if not its cure. He is safe in his opinion that idleness is respon sible for the majority of law viola tions. That is another incentive to the breaking-up of the habit of loafing through enforcement of the laws against vagrancy, u thing' of much neglect in the majority of towns. Clear out the loafers and lessen crime, is a pretty good watchword for State communities.
