THE DEATH OF MR A. J. FLIPPIN.
Mr. Jat. A. Leake. Of Francisco. Pays
A Last Tribute Of Respect
To the Deceased.
Francisco. Jan. 12.
Mr. Editor :
Having been called upon by the
children of Mr. A. J. Flippin to
write his obituary, I feel almost like
shrinking from the task, knowing
full woll that I shall not be able to
do justice to him whom I have
known so long.
Mr. Flippin, together with his
devoted companion, left this
county on the 11th day of Decem
ber, HK)(S, to visit their daughter,
Mrs. Geo. W. Faris, whose home
was Coweta, Indian Territory, i
They arrived there the 16th day
of the above month. He being 75 :
years of age no doubt was broken
down and worried out from such a
long trip—so much that a physi
oian was called to his assistance,
who pronounced his disease heart
trouble, as I understand, and I
have no doubt that all that kind
and loving hands could do was
done for him, but on the 21st day
of December the summons came
and death claimed him as its vic
tim and on the 23rd his body was
consigned to the narrow limits of
the tomb in the cemetery at Wag
oner, Indian Territory, to await
the final resurrection. And while
it is sad to me to write this tribute,
it affords me pleasure to state that
I have been intimately acquainted
with him for over fifty years, and
that there was not a better man or
a more honest citizen ever lived or
died in Stokes county. He was a
consistent member of the Pres
byterian ohuroh and he honored
the profession he had made by an
orderly walk and Christian devo
tion to his church. He was a good
husband, a good father, a good
neighbor and a good and worthy
oitizen, and before laying this
tribute d®wn, T desire to say to
the bereaved widow, children, rel
atives, neighbors and friends of
the deceased that while the flow
ers that may bloom around his
new made grave in that far a-id
distant land, may fade and di., yet
your own dear husband, father
and friend that you loved so well,
will live on and on in that happy
home and will never die. So dry
up your tears and ceaae to mourn
for him • and my earnest prayer is
that when you all are called to die
that you may be prepared to meet
him around that dazzling throne
and all join with him in singing
redeeming grace.
Why should our tears in sorrow
flow
When God recalls his own
And bids them leave this world of
woe
For an immortal crown.
Asleep in Jeaus far from thee
Thy kindred and their graves may
be
But there is still a blessed sleep
From which none ever wake to
weep.

Will Build Roads In Surry County.
The Mount Airy Leader says:
j Mr. R, T. Joyce, who travels for
I the Mount Airy Furniture Com
pany, is here with his family for
i the winter. He has the contract
j for building some county roads in
I the Slate Mountain section of the
! county and will supervise this
; work during his stay here. He is
jan expert road engineer, and sev
| eral years ago built the road from
j Dobson to Kapps Mill, which is
' today the only piece of good road
! in Surry. The fact that Mr. Joyce
is to have charge of this work is a
i guarantee that the work will be
i properly done and should give an
impetus to road building in the
