A TRIP TO THE FAIR.
A Jolly Party From Lawsonville
Attended the Stokes County Fair
Last Wednesday In Spite of Rain.
Lawsonville, Oct. 28.—0n last
Tuesday evening a party assem
bled at Mr. E. C. Sheppard's,
anticipating a glorious trip to the
Stokes County Fair the next
morning. Everything was made
ready and at 9 o'clock all retired.
We slept with one eye open
watching the clock, while the
other dreamed on, seeing visions
of fairs and balloons. By one
o'clock everything was astir, the
provision box was loaded, the
mules were hitched, the party
was aboard and at 1:30 we were
moving toward King. On we
went, the moon shining brightly
upon us, singing merry songs
and all in high spirits. As we
reached the. Seven Island ford,
however, the moon was obscured
by a dark cloud," a dartlp wind
was blowing, and pretty dbon a
slow rain began to fall. Someone
suggested that we turn back,
but not us, we were bent on see
ing the fair, so the bottle (coca
cola) was passed around and we
pushed on. By 4 o'clock we were
in Danbury, but much to our
dismay not a person was a'.vake,
even the chief-of-police had fal
len asleep at his post. Around
the mountain, across rocks and
creeks we went until just at day
break a spring near Flat Shoal
was reached. Here all hands en
joyed a wholesome repast served
in camping style. Again we
started and as we went our
hearts sank at times, thinking
ye had reached the end of the
road or that we had passed the
end. After passing Mt. Vtew
the roads were better, and soon
we were at our journey's end.
As we entered the fair grounds
a heavy rain began, but despite
this we saw and enjoyed all the
exhibits, some of which were ex
cellent. After taking in a few
side shows and getting as wet
and muddy as 'possible, we set
out on the home retreat at two
ten. All the way we faced a
driving rain which put us in bad
spirits. Many funny incidents
too numerous to note 6ccurred on
the return. Darkness overtook
us beyond Danbury and every
one fell into a peaceful nod. As
we passed Snow Creek church all
began to sing "Home, Sweet
Home." Everyone drew a sigh
of relief when at 11.-05 we
reached home after a long, rainy
trip of 56 miles. The party was
composed of Mr. and Mrs. E. C.
Sheppard, Mr.' and Mr*. Zack
Sheppard, Misses Jennie, Nina
t&tOt Elsie Sheppard and' Mr. Car
lis Davis.

STOKES COUNTY FAIR
SUCCESS IN SPITE OF RAIN'
On Account of the Inclement Weather
and the Show at Winaton the
Dates Were Extended
Friday and Saturday—The Big
Gathering of Exhibits and At
tractions.
In spite of the bad weather
for one or twq days, and in spite
of the counter attraction of the
show at Winston, the Stokes
County Fair at King last week
proved quite a success. Wed
nesday was a rough day, a
steady, cold rain falling, but
the Reporter is informed that
more than 700 people entered
the gates that day. The dates
wei;e extended to include Friday
and Saturday, on account of the
weather.
The attractions were good
and the exhibits fine. The Re
porter hopes to publish the list
of premiums $ warded in a sub
sequent issue.
Farmer Near Roanoke, Va, Who
Did Not Believe In Banks, Now
Believes In Them Conversion
Cost Him $700.00.
Near Roanoke, Va., one night
recently, a farmer named Suthers
was robbed of $700.00, the savings
of a life time, while his wife was
beaten into insensibility by rob
bers. Suthers was gone from
home with a load of produce.
The money was kept in the
house, sewed up in a mattress.
A suspicion of the neighbors
leaked out that money was kept
in the house, as Suthers did not
believe in banks. The robbers
came and after knocking the
woman down, and tying her to a
bed post, the search of the
premises found the money. The
robbers escaped, and the Vir
ginia authorities have found no
trace of them. Mrs. Southers
is in a serious condition.
