Page 2 Danbunf Reporter PEPPER BROS., Editors and Prop's. JUNE 7, 1911. A SIGN OF BIGGER AND BETTER FARMING. One of the best evidences of the j improvement in farming methods j in Stokes county is the fine 1 equipment of mules on the plantations. It is a subject of comment among visitors that Stokes county farmers own bet- ! ter mules than any other county in the State. We believe this is so. Farmers are often erit-1 icised for going in debt for costly mules. It must be ad- j mitted that going in debt too heavily is to be looked on with disapproval, but unless a farmer has good land, good stock and good tools, he cannot succeed by grow ing tobacco on the present small margin of profits. After equipping himself with all three of these in dispensable adjuncts to his farm ing operations, he must still have good judgment, energy and enthusiasm to win success. With the whole six, you can't hold him down, and it's no use to try. HAS IREDELL GONE CRAZY ? The other day Iredell county, N. C., followed the lead of many other progressive counties of North Carolina, by voting a j bond issue of $400,000 for the j building of modern roads. Some 1 people might say that Iredell county has gone crazy, but from the evidence in hand it ap p ars that the Iredell people had studied the question very care fully, having ample tima to de liberate. From the overwhelm ing majority in favor of the bond issue, it would seem that i the great majority of the people' were in favor of it. And the record shows that Iredell county is a careful, safe and sane coun ty, and that within her borders) are just as sensible, just as cool headed, just as conservative people as you will find most any where. DELEGATES TO GOOD ROADS CONVENTION. The Reporter, for its part, is ; very much pleased to note the > evidence of progressive ness dis-1 played by our county commis sioners in appointing a number, of Stokes representatives to at tend the Good Roads Convention at Winston on the 13th and 14th. While there is of course no pay attached to the office of a Good Roads convention, it is a distin guished honor and of immense importance. The five men ap pointed are representatives of our best citizenship, and men who stand among those who are highest in character, intelligence and property. It is hoped that they will all go. AN ABSENT BOY S LOVE FOR THE OLD HOME COUNTY. Mr. E. W. Carroll says he will give SSO per year for a period of ten years for a good road from the Forsyth county line north through Stokes via Danbury, and from Rural Hall to the top oi the mountain at Gap. Mr. Carroll does not live in Stokes county but his home is in Winston-Salem. Such is his love, however, for his old home county, and for his friends, that he would be thus liberal to see a good road here, which would mean so much for the up building of the county. The friends of County Com missioner Chap Bodenheimer, of Germantor, it is learned are Btrongl.v urging him to be a can didate for Sheriff next election. Mr. Boc'enheimer is very pop ular with his party, ar.d will no doubt make it interesting for his competitor. COMING MONDAY REIDSVILLE GIPLS DELAYED Party of Automobilists to Arrive At Piedmont On Monday, June 12— Will Possibly Be Forty Or Fifty In the Crowd. The Reidsville Review's auto mobile party to Piedmont Springs i did not make the start on last Monday owing to a hitch in the | arrangements, but will arrive Inext Monday, June 12. The Re view sends the Reporter word that if the weather continues good, so that the roads can be i used by the machines, that there j will be forty or fifty in the party. ! They will be joined at Madison by another delegation, largely augmenting the crowd. The Review's popular voting contest closed Wednesday night, May 31, and the following young ladies were found to be elected: Miss Mary Windsor, of Reidsville, 16,654 Miss Inez Wooten, of Reidsville, 9,119 Miss Edna King, of Reidsville, 9,169 i Miss Delia Jones, 4,239 Miss Gladys Cummings, New Bethel, 5,350 Miss Iris Fitzgerald, Ruffin, 4,811 Miss Bessie Richardson, Wentworth, 6,329 Miss Gertrude McKin ney, Williamsburg, 9,162 Miss Luda Mosely, Wins ton, 2,365 Miss Wilson Watlington, Caswell, 5,188 Miss Mattie Gardner, Danville, 1,849 Miss Kittie May Irvin, Reidsville, 6,619 The following young ladies were not elected in the contest, j but did some good work for the Review, and will accompany the ' party to Piedmont, partly on their own expense and partly on , the expense of the Review- Miss Neitie Pettigrew, Reids ville. On account of the short time | which intervened between the : close of the election and the pro i posed date for the start to Pied- I mont (June 5), manv of the girls ! who had felt a delicacy in getting ready for the trip without being i certain of their election, found ; themselves unable to make the necessary preparations in so short a time. Consequently the publishers of the Review felt impelled to extend the date of j starting another week. This action on the part of the promo ters of the trip met the approval of nearly all of the young ladies, as well as many of their friends and relatives who desired to ac company them.
