MADISON ROUTE THREE. Hydrophobia Among Dogs and Hogs —A Number oi Dogs Being Kill ed. Madison Route 3.—Some of our farmers are still sowing grain. Quite a number! of hogs are being killed hereabouts this time. • It seems that the dogs affected ■with hydrophobia are spreading the disease in this community, not only among dogs; but hogs as well. As it seefns that our citizens are ignorant of the law or disregard it, I think it well to publish the section of revi sal, 3,305. If the owner of any dog shall know, or have good reason to believe, that his dog, or any dog belonging to any person under his control, has been bit ten by a mad dog and shall neg lect or refuse immediately to kill the same, he shall forfeit and pay the sum of fifty dollars to him who will sue therefor, and the offender shall be liable to pay all damages, which may be sustained by any one in his family by the bite of any such dog, and shall be guilty of a misdemeanor. Limit fine not more than fifty dollars or imprisioned not more than thirty days. A little negligence often caures a lot of trouble. "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." Messrs. J. W. Varner and Pete Vernon returned Thursday from Winston, where they had been at work for a while. The young people enjoyed an apron party at Mr. J. P. Lewis' Saturday night. Mr. Lester Ward is moving to Mr. J. W. Gann's today. Miss Cora Joyce had a quilt ing Saturday. Mrs. J. T. Richardson has her children of W. Va., visiting her at present. CITIZEN. LIGHTNING KILLS FEW. In 1906 lightning killed only 169 people in this whole country. One's chances of death by lightn ing are less than two in a million. The chance of death from liver, kidney or stomach trouble is vastly greater, but not if Electric Bitters be used, as Robert Mad sen, of West Burlington, la., proved. Four doctors gave him up after eight months of suffer ing from virulent liver trouble and yellow jaundice. He was then completely cured by Electric Bitters. They're the best stom ach, liver, nerve and kidney remedy and blood purifier on earth. Only 50c at all druggists. Mr. W. J. The first Danbury person to experiment in aeronautics is Mr. William Mounce, Jr., who last Friday night about dark rose suddenly from an advantageous Koint on the hill south of Dan ury, described a few preca rious cur\ es, executed a few daz zling stunts, then hit the ground with more force than grace. There were no eye-wit nesses to Bill's spectacular feat, but there is good evidence that it was really stunning—at least the last act was. Persons in the neighborhood, over their late sup pers, recall certain detonations which were unmistakable. The aeroplane waS not much hurt by the fall, but the motor was severely skinned up, the cargo distributed up and down the hill, while severe pains were dis tributed up and down the Bill. This is a fable, which is adorn ed with a moral. But it is more full of truth than poetry. The facts are these : Bill was re turning from Walnut Cove with a load of groceries, and as he at tempted to drive his little mule over the precipice intervening between the top of the hill and the lower level, his steed lost its footing, and the next instant mule, wagon and driver togeth er with all the appurtenances thereunto belonging, turned over and rolled down the incline. The wagon was not so much battered as the mule, while Bill's arm was pretty badly hurt in the full. Daisy middlings and Arbuckle's coffee were sown on the plowed grounds below the road in indis criminate confusion. Not long ago Bill was discuss ing vehemently the condition of the public roads when he was asked by a good roads man : "How much will you give to wards building a sand clay or macadam road from Danbury to Walnut Cove?" Bill looked down, scratched his head, then looked up with great public spirit and benefi cience shining in his eyes : "I will give 50 cents." His voice trembled over the idea of nis proposition being accepted "How many days do you work Buy Your Christmas Goods From Mrs. R. H. Joyce Meadows, N. C. "Well suppose," asked the good roads man, "that you could get out of working on the roads at all, how much tax would you be willing to pay to got a good modern road?" "I wouldn't give over 50 cents," Bill said. And this is the kindof reason ing one is met with among the enemies of good roads. ENDS WINTER'S TOUBLES. To many, winter is a season of trouble.
