THE DANBURY REPORTER. VOLUME XL. FINISHES 7TH YEAR THE BANK OF STOKES COUNTY Starts Upou the Eighth Year Of Its Existe.nct, With Every Pros pect Of Continued Usefulness and Success. Last week, on September 9, the Bank of Stokes County started upon the eighth year of its existence, having opened for business on September 7. 1905, with a cash capital fully paid in. During the seven years in which the Bank has transacted busi ness at Danbury and Walnut Cove it has steadily grown in the confidence and esteem of the people of Stokes County. Its deposits have yearly shown a steady increase, while its sur plus fund, this being the profits earned and undivided, over and above the regular annual dividend paid to its stockholders, has grown until today the surplus is about half as big as the capital, thus giving additional security todepositors. The Bank of Stokes has always been conservative. Its policy is "Safety Always." In consequence it has never sus tained a loss. It does not loan money on questionable security. Its stockholders are solvent men. It is examined regularly no less than seven times a year, by competent anil interested examiners and committees. The adoption of this safeguard gives the people whose money we handle assurance that their fur>ds are in safe and competent hands. The Bank of Stokes has always been under the direction of ex perienced bankers, who are close and careful men. The Bank of Stokes was one of the few banks in the country that passed through the 1907 panic paying cash at all times. This is a proof of its ability to with stand the financial storms., During our experience of 7 years j we have come in contact with | and been of service to hundreds j of the best citizens, men and women, of Stokes county, and this relationship has certainly been pleasant on our part. We desire to take this opportun ity to thank the good people \ of Stokes for their liberal sup-j port of their home bank, and to promise that we shall do our! best to merit a continuance of | their oatronage. We are in the best position 1 ever before to give every facility j and accommodation to our i friends and customers consistent I with sound and safe principles 1 of banking. We invite the de- 1 • posits of every man, woman and • child of Stokes county, who are looking for a convenient and safe place to keep their savings. KURFEES WRITES i ABOUT THE CONVENTIONS I Wants Stokes Republicans To Know About the Fraud Practiced At Charlotte As Well As At Chicago. ! Mr. Editor : i your paper the writer has em phatically contended that no Re ! publican should be bound by the action of the Chicago Republican j convention, held In«t Jun{>, since j fraud was rampant in practically | all of its proceedings. But we ' find recently that Chicago is not the only place fraud ran be per -1 petrated. The recent so-called Republican convention held in Charlotte Sept. 4th. is evidence that such tactics are now b> ing practiced at home. lam anxious that the Stokes county Republi cans know how the will of the people all over North Carolina was thwarted by iheh'gh-handed method.; at Charlotte, and I therefoiv attach herewith a clip ping from the Greensboro News which gives a part of the fraudu lent program. This clipping is a ( statement issued by the commit l tee, representing the progressive Republicans, which met in Greensboro Sept. 10th to confer with a committee of the Pro- j jgressive party. After reading! j this statement I want every' j honest Republican in Stokes j 'cojtity to stop and think—ask' i j yourself the question—should 1, {be honest in politics as well as | lin business ? I f so, how can I [support the ticket nominated at 1 .Charlotte? Remember now. itj J was not men belonging to the Progressive party who were kicked out at Charlotte. It was men who were life-long Repub licans and who are Republicans yet, but simply because they will not vote for Mr. Taft. they are kicked out, and had to see their respective counties misrepre sented instead of represented. , Let us all be Republicans in the true sense of the word and repu diate such bossism by voting for | Roosevelt and Johnson and the j State Progressive ticket. JNO. W. KURFEES.. The statement referred to above follows : We call the attention of the I people of the state to the fact that the state committee in mak ing up the temporary roll of the delegates at Charlotte committed more flagrant crimes against the rule of the people than did the national committee at Chicago. The national committee a t ! Chicago unseated enough re gularly and legally elected deie | gates to give a majority to Taft. There it was necessary to un seat only 70 delegates to accom plish this dishonest purpose. Here it was necessary to unseat , SDO delegates to defeat the will of the people. To carry out the machine program it was neces sary for them t-> out Herod Herod and thev did it. "The state committee decided every contest, without regard to its merits, against the ex pressed wil! of the people. They seated in many counties only one or two delegates, those who would agree to vote for the | i machine program, and denied seats t ) all others. They denied seats to whole delegations from j counties where there were j contests, a few sample cases jof which are here given : ( "Buncombe county in a regular j convention by a majority of ( over 3,(HK) votes elected 35 dele gates to the state convention. Those defeated for delegates | and their friends, 22 in all, held 1 afterwards a rump convention and sent six delegates to the convention. The regular dele gates came to Charlotte and were denied seats while the six rump delegates were seated, though they represented only 22 votes in all of Buncombe county. These six bolters cast the full :V> votes of Buncombe in that convention, which was more than there are Taft men in the county.
