BEST WAN' The Advantage Over the Old Flan of Cutting the' Stalk -- Ever\ Leaf Gets' Ripe, and I here Is No \\ asie. Til J 1 indications are that in a few years the fanners of Stokes county will entirely abandon 1 the oltl wasteful plan of cutting : tobacco, and adopt wholly the \ priming method. «>ur farming readers are invited to read the follow ing: "By t! e one method the leave* "primed" are pulled from the stalk as they ripen, aiul ar ranged in the barn at once for curing: by the other method, the leaves are not so removed, I it the whole stalk is cut near the ground and suspend) d in an in verted manner in the curing barn. " lhe normal coarse of ripen ing of the leaves of the tobacco plant is from the ground up, hence all of the leaves cannot reach the same degree of ripeness at the same time. It is c'.ear therefore, that the moth d which delays the harvest till the greatest number of best leaves have reached the proper stage of ripeness must of necessity sacrifice many of the bottom and top leaves, the former being 'overripe and the latter too green for cutting. About the only advantage that we can see in this methodof liarvestingthe crop lies in the saving of labor, bat we rather suspect deterioration in the market value of the produ/t will ovore cue this. "Not only has the priming method a great ad\antage •• r the c. tting method, in that it makes i: p« nsible for the grow rs ■ i gatia r every leal on e\ rv : talk ;it its best stage of riper, -s, but the additional great pi. :;i --ologieal advantage of securing ! uniformity in euro, color, weight and «i'_iulit\ in the barn. "The most careful oxpori-' meats, according to Hr. W, \V. (Jarner, of the l.'nited 1 >e; art mert of Agrie alture, have shown that the picked are about 11 per! cent h' avii r after curing than' those cured on the stalk. The ab ivo consid rations, together with tii • additional facts that nearly all the hij; host-priced to ba "cos are now being cured by the method of picking the leaves generally known as priming, must point emphatically to the wisdom of this method of harvest ing anil curing cur best tnbac c >s." •!, 1,.
