THE DANBURY REPORTER TO THE AUTOMOBILE DRIVER The Responsibility Of the Man Who Sits Behind the Wheel — Some Good Advice. (By Dr. Frank Crane.) Before you climb in behind your wheel this morning, Mr. Chauffeur, I wish vou would learn a little lesson by heart. It is this: If a person on foot is injured by my machine, I AM TO BLAME. Do you get it? Under no conceivable circumstances are you to run into, bump against, push or jostle a man, woman or child who U afoot. What's that ? They ought to be careful ? Forget it! It is you who are to be careful. It is you wl'o are in control of a big man-killing piece of machinery on the public highways, and the responsibility is all yours. They ought to use common sense, you say : They ought to take ordinary precaution and look where they're going. Get all that line of excuses clean out of your mind. You have no busine?s to presume upon any caution, common sense, or even intelligence on the part of people afoot. The reason is that they are not handling a machine, and you are. They may be thinking of nothing, absent minded. Their wits may be a mile away And they have a perfect right to moon along the street if they ch00.32. It is your business not to hit them. It is up to you to be so care ful that a child cannot run un der your wheels on purpose. You should have such control of your engine that no one can force an accident upon you of that kind. You ought to be able to run your car through a street full of blind, deaf and dumb, and drunk men. Remember, when you have crushed a playing child to death it will be no excuse to your own conscience 13 say, "He delibera tely ran right under my car." You have no i ight to allow a child t 1 ) run under your car. When you see children playing, go slow. Creep along. Stop. When you see a nervous woman hesitating and giving signs that she does not know whether to go forward or back, stop ! Give her all the time in the world. When you approach pedes trians from behind, blow your horn while yet a long way jff: mgr N 'JffiCANS OfILYI 5 am looking for [i WORK!! I am a Soap-Maker. I am a Scrubber. I am a Cleaner. In a nutshell, remember that the person on foot has the right of way always and everywhere. And rennmbar that no excuse goes for running down a child or a woman, nor any human be ing, for that matter. You arj in control of the machine. Your foot is on the brake. It is your fault if any thing happens. Take no chances ! Touch no bocze ! Keep your eyes open ! Be careful, for no excuse will go. lews of King, King Route 1, May 11.—Haul j ing fertilizer is all the go nowa days. It comes before the weather's hot, an l tits around and files its legs, and lays at least ten million eggs, and every egg will bring a fly to drive us crazy by and by. Oh, 1 every fly that skips our smat-' teis will have five million sons and daughters, and countless first and second cousins, and aunts and uncles, scores of dozens, and fifty-seven billion nieces; so knock the blamed thing all to pieces. And every \ niece and every aunt—unless we swat them so they can't —| will lay enough dodgasted eggs to fill up ten five-galbn kegs, j ere summer hies, will bring) forth twenty trillion flies, And thus it goes, an endless chain, jso all our swatting is in vain, i unless wo do that swatting soon, in MayHime and in early June. So men and brothers, let us rise, jgird up our loir.s and swat the flies ! And sisters, leave your cozy bowers, where you have wasted golden hours: with ardor in your souls and eves, roll up your sleeves and swat the flies. | | Large Distillery Destroyed.
