Life at Piedmont continues gay ai d festive. On last Friiay evening a delightful porch party was given at f he hotel, its spaci ous verandas being set with tables for progressive auction and progressive rook. Quite a number of ladies from Cottage Hill joined the ladies of the hotel in the games, which were called at 10 o'clock. At the west en trace to the piaza Misses Kate Ruckfr Penn, of Reidsville, and Caroline Mcßae, of Winston- Salem. presented the arriving players with score cards in pink and white. Upon finding their | places the ladies began the games, playing most enthusiasti cally for two hours. At the end of that time it was found that in auction the first prize belong r ed to Miss Tupman, the second prize to Miss Louise Hill, of Lexington, and the third prize to Miss Laura Noel, of Elkin. In rook Miss Ethel Rowe was presented with the first prize, Mrs. Rowe, of Greensboro, with the second and Miss Mamie Lebsy, of Savannah, Ga., with the third. After the games a social hour was spent, during which a refreshing ice course was served. The hotel orchestra furnished delightful music at this affair. Those in attendance A were Mesdames W. P. The danca of Saturday night was an unusually large one and , presented a very pretty picture with its feminine dancers in vari-colored evening costume. In the evening at 8 o'clock the ball rool,was used in which to hold : servic3s conducted by Rev. C. W. Ervin, pastor of the Presby terian church in Danburv. A good sized croud was in attend ance. The Sunday evening concert immediately following the re ligious services was up to its splendid standard set by the three very able musicians Messrs. j Merz, violinist; Monoly, calloist: and Tupman. piainist. The selections rendered formed the request program which delighted . the hearers. On Wednesday a horseback i party made an excursion over • the picturesque road to Vade! Mecum where they took dinner, returning to Piedmont in the late afternoon. A camping party from Ger man ton arrived here last week and spent several days near the hotel lawn tenting. The three young men in the company were Messis. Lauriston Powers, Holly Hartgrove and Ernest West moreland. Mrs. W. L. Trotter, of Greens-, oro, who is now occupying her home on Cottage Hill, is enter taining a jolly house party of young people this week, the party having arrived Saturday. PRiMARIES HELD Delegates Elected To Coun ty Republican Convention. HERE SATURDAY. IST Sharp Contests In ihj Appoint ment of Delegates For Clerk and Treasurer. The county Republican primaries were hald at the various voting precincts in S'okes Saturday and delegates were elected to the county con vention which will be held at the court house here next Saturday. A majority of the precincts voted to repeal the resolution passed by a former convention that no officer should hold more than two terms of the same office and the delegates were instructed to vote in favor of repealing at the convention here next Saturday. The only contests in the primaries were in regard to the candidates for Clerk of the Court and Treasurer. For Clerk of the Court Mr. M. T. Chilton, the present incumbent, received a majority of the delegates, the others being divided between Messrs. I). V. Carroll, Chas. R. Helsabeck, H. McGee and C. M. Jones. Mr. Helsabeck has most of them. In the Treasurer's contest Messrs. J. A. Fagg and R. P. Gl'dewell broke about even, while Mr. L. T. Tucker was a close third, end Frank Petree has nearly as many delegates as Mr. Tucker. Dr. W. C. Slate, the present Sheriff, and Mr. John G. By Highwaymen, But Escapes. |much building I ! Large Attendance At Republican Primaries Saturday — Other ! Items. Walnut Cove, July 29.—With probably the largest attendance of any ever held here the Re publicans of this precinct met Saturday for the purpose of electing delegates to the county convention to be held at Danbury next Saturday. A slight wave of dissension was noticeable in the meeting and three sets of delegates were placed in nomin ation by the contesting factions. When the ballot was taken Messrs. A. W. Davis, Wesley Mabe. D. A. Boles, J. F. Hawkins, and A. J. Fair were declared ths elected delegates. When the vote was taken for office of Treasurer Fagg received 37, Glidewell 37 and Petree 8 and delegates were instructed to cast their vote at the county conven tion exactly in this proportion. A section was made and carried unanimously instructing the delegates to vote for the abolish ment of the famous two-term resolution. Although the pri mary passed cff quitely theie is a 'feeling in their air which means interesting times are assured in the county conven tion. Quite a great deal of excite ment was occasioned on Main Street late Saturday evening when Policeman Smith attempt ed to arrest a gentleman who had imbibed too freely of corn juice and was expounding his ! convictions in a loud and pro fane tone of voic?, without re gard .to the wishes of his au dience. After several attempts to escort his prisoner to the lockup the officer turned the loaded victim over to his friends who agreed to care for him. During the struggle several gathered arouuJ and it looked for a while as if there would be a general mixup. Just after midnight Saturday while on his way home from his barber s'lop Mr. V. W. Him. was held up by a gang of men and would have been robbed of a considerable amount of money had he not ran at full speed to to his home where he secured a gun to defend himself. In the meantime the rob'oers had fol lowed him into his yard and several shots were exchanged before he left him alone. Dur ing the same night the store of Garfield Hairston was broken into but nothing was taken. A colored.man who was crossing the street near the store had a lantern shot to pieces in his had and barely escaped with his life. The sound of the hammer and saw can de hecrd incessantly on every side during these summer months and every stroke is significant of the growth and progress of Walnut Cove. The new warehouse is being rapidly built, the new brick garage al most completed, and several new residences are in course tf construction. Mr. Will Fulton, of Greens boro, spent Sunday and Mon day here with relatives, going from here to King where he will visit his sister, Mrs. Dr. Keiger. Mrs. R. A. Hedgecock and J. R. Vcss went to Winston-Salem on business Thursday. 1 Mr. Sullivan Booe, of Walker town, was here Monday on busi ness. Elder H. D. Mickey preached an interesting sermon at the Junior Hall Sunday night. The Laßerta show gave nighly performances here last week with large attendance every night. Messrs. Jno. W. Gann, J. W. Burrell, Walter Hawkins, B. J. Savage, R. L. Nunn and Joseph Martin were among the business visitors here the past week. Mrs. Lillian Yew, of Old Fort, is spending some time here with relatives. Rev. T. J. Bayles lof Mount Airy Presbyterian j churc'i, will conduct a week's meeting at Asbury Presbyterian church, beginning tonight. Mr. Warner of Winston-Salem, is conducting a successful meet ing at Dan River church. There have been twenty three con versions. The Asbury Sunday School had their annual picnic Saturday. A musical program was given which added very much to the occasion. An athletic contest was another important feature, and prizes were given to those who excelled in running, jump ing and other stunts. Dan River basebal team play ed Big Creek Saturday.
