given, a convention uf the Re
publican party of Stokes county,

house in Danbury, on this the
Ist day of August, 1!)14, for the
purpose of nominating a candi
date for the General Assembly,
candidates for the various county
offices, electing delegates and
alternates to represent the coun
ty in the State, Congressional.
Judicial and Senatorial conven
tions, and to transact such other
business as may properly come
before the convention.
The convention is called to
order by C. M. Jones, chairman
of the Republican Executive
Committee of the county, at the
hour of eleven o'clock a. m.
On motion N. O. Petree is
elected permanent chairman and
D. V. Carroll permanent secre
tary of the convention.
Upon a roll call of the election
precincts of the county, the same
are found to be fully represent
ed.
Upon motion to repeal a form
er resolution passed by a former
Republican convention of Stokes
county, to the effect that no
person should hold the same
county office more than two
terms in succession, the same
was carried, and the resolution
is repealed, and declared of no
further force.

Miss Mary Foley, of Stuart,
is spending the week at Mr.
Geo. Martin's also Miss Esther
Hall and brother, Lee, are visit
ing the Misses Martin and other
friends at Peter's Creek.
Miss Mae Ayers of Stuart is
visiting the Misses Mays this
week.
Misses Mae and Lena Martin
entertained a number of their
young friends Saturday night
and Sunday. Among those
present were Misses Lillie
Adams, Mary "Foley, Carrie
Terry, Ida Edwards, and Messrs.
Andrew Padgett, Grover Beasley,
Reid Gunter, George Owens,
Edgar Foley, Ed Gilbert, James

James Puckett. All report a
jolly time.
We learn that Miss Lena
Martin had the misfortune of
geting horse-kicked Monday
night. She is reported to be im
proving. Hope she will soon be
out again.

Norfolk to visit her sister.

day evening Mr. William H.
Gentry, one of the oldest citizens
of the county died at his home
two miles north of here after
a lingering illness of several
months. He leaves to mourn
, death a wife, five sons and four
daughters, Messrs. Sam Gentry,
,'of Mt. Airy; Sterling Gentry, of
West Virginia: Matt and Will
Gentry, of Indiana, Mesdames
W. S. Vaughn, of this place, C.
H. Rayborn and J. 11. Fulton
i of Greensboro; and Squire Ven
, able, of Winston. Mr. Gentry
was twice married, the first
time to a daughter of the late
Samuel Fulton and later to Miss
Margarett Watkins. In his
earlier years Mr. Gentry was
. prominently connected with
public alTairs, being for years
j sheriff of the county. He was a
| gentleman of the old school,
i' highly esteemed by all who knew
: him and will be sadly missed in
jthe community where he had
11 spent the greater part of his life.
: i The remains were laid to rest in

indisposed for several days is

Two men, supposed to be the
ones wh") have committed so
many burglaries and thefts at
this place were arrested by
officers Joyce and Smith at the
water tank two miles >east of
here Monday. In a suitcase
which they threw away when
they saw the officers, a complete
set of burglar's tools, pistoU,
glycerine and dynamite caps
were found. The parties who
appeared to tough characters
refused to divulge their names
denying that they were the
parties wanted, however, they
were bound over to court and in
default of bond were sent to
jail.
Japan Learning English.
A stray piece of news got int.)
the press in a rouudabout way
this week, to the effect that
probably 100.000 bov and girls
now study English in Japanese
secondary schools. A recent
ten-day conference of 500 teach
ers of English in that country
was conducted entirely in Eng
lish in that Baron Kikuchi, pre
sident of the Imperial University,
presided. Many professors from
universities attended. It is claim
ed for English that it will be
quite universal in Japan within a
lew generations.

UNION PICNIC
To Be Held Ar Danburv Oil
Saturday, August 15— Big
Crowd Expected.
The annual picnic of the Stokes
County Farmers' Union will be
held in Danbury on Saturday,
Aug. 15. Every local in the
County is invited to send a full
delegation, as it is desired to
have the best picnic yet held.
The ladies are respectfully in
vited to prepare baskets of good
things to eat. Mr. Comer of
Danville, Va., and Mr. W. H.
Nichols. State Organizer, of
Wake county, will be present
and deliver addresses.
Maj. C. M. Stedman to
Open Campaign Soon
Washington, Aug. I.—Rep
resentative Charles M. Stedman
is preparing to open his camp
aign in the fifth North Carolina
congressional district at once
and push it vigorously to a con
clusion. Other North Carolina
members, where they have fights
on, will do likewise. Major
Stedman believes in getting in
close touch with his constituents,
fight or no fight, and for this rea
son he will keep actively in touch
with his district until congress
quits and he will then spend all
of his time in the various coun
ties comprising it.
E. 0. Sherrill, who is employ
ed at the Capitol, has gone to
Greensboro the prepare to get
busy in behalf of Major Stedman.

summer vacation he has in Ashe
ville, will have his home in North
Carolina connected up with the
state department by a special
wire and will manage the Mexi
can situation from there.
