While returning from Wins: >n-
Salem one day the past week the
writer noticed -\ good l'oree of
••■>.*n and mules grading 0:1 the
road between Dennis and the
,? rokes county line, and it is pre
sumed that this l'our-miles f
ro.id. which connects the good
roads in Forsyth with the
roads in Stokes, will he finished
up soon, so that the citizens of
this section of Stokes will soon
have a modern road all the wav
from here to Winston Salem with
the exception of the much-talked
;>f miles of road through Mead
ows township, and we believe
♦hat the Meadows commissioners
will at least improve this road
through their township so that
her people as well as the people
>f this part of the county can
market their tobaccc and with
some satisfaction. The good
-oad at each end of this road may
/nake it only seem so, but we
believe that it is worse than we
have ever seen it at this season
if the year. What its condition
will be this winter -if it isn't
fixed—we leave the reader to
i nagine.

Stonevi'de, a iittie village just
North of us. has had electric
lights for several years, and
within the next week or so Wal
nut Cove, just to the South of
us. will have them also. Neither
of these towns are near so large as
Madison nor do half the business
our town docs: yet the citizens
of Madison still have to, tote a
I intern when they venture out
on the streets at night, and as a
result our town not only gets
talked about, but the men who
claim they are trying to run it
get talked about. This, of
course is wrong and should not
be. but nevertheless it is just the
same. Perhaps, by the time I
Pine Hall and Kllisboro get their
electric plants installed, the Madi- i
son town commissiners will be
gin to wake up and may be in a J
notion to grant somebody a fran-:
chise to put lights in Madison. '
Mark you, we say perhaps they!
"may" be in a notion to do so
there is nothing certain or de

Mr. Mete's Summer
i Home To Be Improved
Mr. A. \V. McAlister and
family returned to their home in
Oreensboro yesterday, after
spending the summer at their
attractive cottage at Piedmont
Springs. During their stay at
Piedmont they entertained a
great many young people from
their home town as well a? other
places. The last of these guests
left the past week.
The Reporter learns that Mr.
McAlister will make considerable
additions and changes at his cot
tage before ix-xt season. The
building will hava another story
added to it. while spacious
porches will be erected all around
the building. This season Mr.
McAlister had a nice garage
| erected for the two automobiles
which he owns and which lie ex
| pccts to keep at his summer
h ims next season. He is con
i sidering building a lake i:i the
j branch just behind his cottage.
Sow Crimson Clover
and Save Fertilizer Bills
The indications are that prices of
fertilizer the coming season will be
much higher than usual, owing to tho
fact that the supply of fertilizer ma
terials will be largely cut oil' on ac
count of the European war. This
should cause farmers everywhere to
fiut land in crops that will save ferti
izer bills. Jvotlii.ig will do this better
than Crimson Clover. It is unques
tionably one of the best soil-improv
ers that can be put in, and wherever
it is grown, it gives largely increased
crops of corn, cotton and tobacco.
We have secured more liberal sup
plies of Crimson Clover than was ex
pected and will be able to sell at
much more reasonable prices than
was anticipated.
WOOD'S CROP SPECIAL gives
full and interesting information a
bout the fertilizing value of Crimson
Clover; also about other seeds for

HORRIBLE CRIME.
Oliver Reynolds, of Patrick
County. Kills Young Ladv
He Was In Love With.
Stuart, Ya., Sept. 10.
One of the most horrible and
distressing crimes that ever occur
red in this county was the tragedy
enacted near Ballard Monday
evening, when Oliver Reynolds
assailed and killed Miss Lslia.
the beautiful 111 year old daugh
ter of Mr. and Mrs. Jeff Cock
ram. The girl had gone from
h:r home up to her uncL-'s, Matt
Helms', who lives near by, to
spend the evening, and had step
ped out a little way from the
house to get some apples, when
Reynolds suddenly appeared ar.d
nearly cut olf the girl's heal
He then shot himself in the neck
but indicted but slight injury to
himself. The young lady died
about S:o'.) o'clock that night.
Reynolds was arrested and
brought here to jail Tuesday.
It has not been learned that
Reynolds give any explanations
of why he committed the crime,
out it is the general impression
that he was in love with the
, young lady and had been unsuc
cessful in his suit, she having re
fused to accept his attentions.
Reynolds is a man 2-i years, and
lived in that community, and
had been considered a peaceful,
harmless fellow.
Further details received since
the above was written are as fol
lows.
Reynolds had gone with Miss
, Lelia and her sister to gather ap
ples. The older girl climbed the
tree and was shaking oti' apples
for the others to pick up. After
a while Reynolds suddenly seized
a rock and threw it striking the
girl in the stomach, knocking her
'almost senseless, but as she turn
ed to flee, he fell upon hor with
a knife, cutting twoor three long
gashes down her neck, and when 1
she weakened so she fell he then
pruceeded to cut her throat by
several strokes that went almost
around her neck. All this hap
pened before the sister in the
tree could get down, a!cho she
was screaming for help. Rey
nolds ran immediate!/ to the
i house, seiz.?d his pis'o' and shot
himself, the ball taking affect in
the right side of the neck. He
fired a second shot which missed
and by this time a brother to the
murdered girl took the weapon
away from him. He then Hed up
the road towards Wade Hylton's
and a phone message was sent to
Hylton's to stop him, and when
he headed off and arrested him,
the prisoner begged to be killed.
Hylton kept him in # charge and
i brought him to jail Tuesday.
Reynolds said he killed the girl
because he loved her, that she
would not marrv him and he
could not bear the idea of her
marrying any one else. He is
• quoted as saying that he expects
the death penality for his crime
a-.d wants to be electrocuted.
He also says this was the fourth
time he had tried to get the
chance to kill the girl, that he
had planned to commit the crime
and that he wa» perfectly in his
right mind.
