FIRE PRE\ ENTION' DAY;
To Supeiintendents and'
rcachcrs of the Public!
Schools ol North Carolina. 1
! I
I urge the co-operation of i
Superintendents and Teachers
with the State Insurance Depart
ment in its commendable efforts
.to prevent loss of property and
life in North Carolina from tire.
Let every teacher on Friday pre
ceding "Fire Prevention Day"
read to the school children the
proclamation of the Covernor and
the letter and practical suggest
ions of the Insurance Commis
' sioner for the pre\ Mition of fires. \
Post the suggestions in the school
room and observe them, not only
on "Fire Prevention Day," but
throughout the school term. I
have no doubt that the loss of
many shoolhouses in North Caro-'
lina by tire can be prevented by
the observance of these simple 1
precautions, and that the de- i
struction of much other property j
by fire not and hereafter can!
I "
be prevented by instructing!
the school children to observe
these precautions for the preven
tion of unnecessary tires.
Very respectfully,
•J. V. JOYNER.
State Superintendent of Public
Instruction.

75 Bushels Per Acre
Yield Corn Club Boys.!
Raleigh, Sept. 21.—Seventy-1
five bushels an acre is what the
North Carolina Corn Club boys
are putting as their this year's
average. Last week the officer
in charge at the experiment
station at West Raleigh asked
each of the boys to report an .
estimate of the vear's yield, and ,
up t.i the latter fart of the week
about 1.000 had reported. It
seems that this will be a good,
year for the com crop altho it
was rather unfavorable for a
good stand to be attained in j
some parts >f the c tate this
s tiring.
The membership >i the c.»rn
.•!uhs in North Carolina is about
o.'»". At bushels an acre
the total yield would be 22.", M"0
bushels, which will be a good
addition to the state's wealth.
But many of the boys are plant
ing larger areas than une acre,
and it is thought that this will
raise the state yield of the boy?
ah 'it 1 o,oi i) bushels.
