Farm Demonstration. ANEW COURSE ! IN CORN CLUB WORK r Plans Under Which the New , Work Will Be Conducted. ] • The management of the Boys' j'■ Corn Club work has mapped out a | 1 new course for club work for the new year which makes the corn ' club work more attractive in that it gives every boy in the work an | 1 equal chance with every other boy in the work. The old plan 1 we have followed for the past 1 few years, awarding prizes for 1 highest yields has been very suc • cessful. In a general way show- ' ing the possibilities of our soil and at the same time training ' the boys. But it has had one discouraging feature. The fact that some boys' fathers have much better soil than others/ made it almost impossible for the boy on the poor soil to make as great a yield as the boy on the ' better soil, but under the new method every boy will have an equal chance in the work since he will be rewarded on the per centage of increase rather than i highest yield. In audition will 1 give the boy a training in the I much needed knowledge that of soil building. , Following is a letter from our | State Management of club work ( setting forth the plans under, which work will be conducted, ( , also form of application card: West Raleigh. Sept. 7, Dy Dear Corn Club Boy : We have through the club work demonstraed to the world the remarkable corn producing possibilities of Southern soil.: However, we are convinced that i the greatest good to the greatest number can be accomplished bv showing how, by crop rotation and the application of good meth ods, the farmer with poor soil, i (and the average North Carolina soil is poor soil t may increase the productivity of his soil and i ZZZIZIIZIZZZZZIIIZIIZZZIIZIZZZZIIIZZIZZIZIZZIIIIZZZZIZZIZIIII Fanners' Union Bank & Trust Co. I I at the same time make a profit each year, Basing our opinion upon re sults obtained in other lines of club work we believe we can more easily and more effective ly demonstrate a few simple soil-building processes through the boys than in- any other way. j For this purpose WJ want several | hundred boys, scattered over North Carolina, representing all types of soil, to join the Crop Rotation Club. In this club we J shall base our prizes largely, upon the per cent of increase in! crop yield. The Division of; Agronomy of the Experiment J Station is cooperating with us in j furnishing instructions as to the j best crops to plant, their cultiva-: tion, fertilization, etc. The legumes, both winter and sum- j mer growing, will be emphasized., Therefore, if you have or will i put in a winter cover crop you have started your Crop Rotation work. > | We prefer having boys join this club whose age permits them to remain a member at least three years before passing the age limit of IS years. Thei boys joining this club can still be a member of the Corn Club. | Through this club we arc r.ot only making it possible for the boy with poor soil to have an equal showing with the boy who has rich land, but we shall get isome results which will prove j invaluable to the State of North Carolina. Take this matter up with your father immediately and if he is willing to cooperate with us in this undertaking, you and he sign the blanks belowand return at once: Dear Sir: f I hereby make application for membership in the Boys' Crop Rotation Club, and agree to select at least 2 acres of ui.iform, poor soil, follow your instructions for at least V> years and keep a complete record on blanks which sha'l be supplied. Should any thing occur to prevent my follow ing this up I} years I shall ar range with my father or some one else to carry it on. Name of boy. I hereby agree to furnish my ; boy the land for the Rotation Club, and to let him have what ! profit he makes. ■ | Name of father. I T. E. BROWNE, |Ass't. In Charge Boys' Club j j Work. I ~~ We hope fathers will co-operate with us in this work. Let us 1 endeavor to make Stokes county j , the leading county in this work. We can do it. We have the soil I and we have the boys. So let's j I line up and see what a grand I showing we can make in the ■ 9 work. It will not only mean | much to ts in the way of produc- 9 tion. but the early training the | boys receive will mean much to | | them in after life. W. P. HOLT.
