A VISIT TO THE MOONLIGHT SCHOOL A Former Teacher Tells of Some of the Things He Saw and the Impressions He Got. Walnut Cove Route 1, Nov. 29. Editor Reporter: i Please allow me space in your j valuable paper to describe my visit to a session of the moon -1 light school. I received an invitation to | visit the Moonlight School ; which was being conducted for the benefit of the adult illiter ates. I arrived at the school 1 house late—l mean that I was tardy for I thought that pupils of that school would be late as we boys used to be when we went to school, but there was where I got left, for all the students were there and not only there, but they were at work. When I opened the door and peered in it was a scene that I shall never forget. The room was not full of people but seated at half a dozen desks sat men who realized their lost opportuni ty, and they were beginning to realize the value of an education. They were working with a grim determination. Not a minute were they willing to loose. I immediately became more in terested in the work and offered the teacher my assistance. She told me that 1 could help one of the students. I went over and ; olFered my services which he | readily and eagerly accepted. I began to teach him, and I want Ito say that I taught school five ! years and I never had a student so attentive in my life. He was eager to learn and seemed com pletely amazed that he had I learned to read and write his | name. He had often been em i harassed when he had been asked I to sign a paper, but now he could [sign without suffering the em harassment of being only able to make his mark as he had often had to do. Th's was only one of the minor advantages that the Moonlight school accomplished, for those people are now interested in school and they realize the im portance of an education, and when we get the fathers and mothers interested then, and only then, can the free school system accomplish the best re ults. The teachers of Stokes county have been loyal to the cause. They have given their services without price and surely the inspiration that they received will help them to realize that the little salary attached to teaching is not the only reward that they receive. They will not only have monuments to their graves for educating boys and girls, but they will have added to the inscription: "We also tried to give their fathers and mothers a chance."
