WINSTON-SALEM. \. ( RUM-RUNNERS DOING BUSINESS Government Is Unable Io Cope With Them, Offi cial Say. New York. March -'2. Reports that six more rum laden vessels had left the Bahamas for Ameri can waters and that three schoon ers believed to be the advance guard >f a spring rum fleet from St. I'ierre. Miquelon, had dropped anchor oil' the It bode Island coast, today added to the worries of prohibition enforcement authori ties. It. Q. Morrick. newly appoint ed zone enforcement chief, met the news with the statement that there was nothing he could do about it. The federal prohibition enforcement office has no fleet to send out to cope with the situat ion, he said.and was compelled to rely on the coast guard and cus toms service to break it up. Captain Meed, coast guard com mander fur the New \ ork divi sion, said there were three coast guard vessels in his district which has a coast line of about 2>o miles —doing "occasional" work against the rum-runners. He pointed out that the coast guard had other duties to per form! Customs authorities said they had the cutter Lexington on the trail of the rum-runners, but de clared she was far from able to cope with the traffic. Touching on the wireless mes sage llashed last night from the rum-running >acht Ister to a man at Times Snuare hotel and pur porting to advise him that a small boat of liquor was drifting oil" the Highlands, Captain Heed de clared he was proceeding on the t heory that it was a code message The message as received hv customs officers read; "Motor boat adrift. Headed for New Inlet. Yours fur the salvage. Ister."' The man to whom the message was addressed sent two messages to the Ister, the first reading: "The agent will be out this after noon" and the second, "Am sending three boats to different points," The Ister, it was said, is loaded with Scotch whiskey taken on at Glasgow, from which port the British fleet was expected to operate. The six vessels which customs authorities were notified had cleared from the Bahamas with liquor and which have been put officially on the "suspicious list" although they are ostensibly b >und for other ports, are: British schooner Lucile M. Smith, 3.13K) cases; British schooner Sadie A. Nickles, 1,800 cases; American motorboat Tru ant, 100 cases; British auxiliary schooner Inia, 700 cases; Ameri can schooner Liberty ">OO eases; and American auxiliary schooner Esther, GOO cases, Edward Barnes, assistant solicitor for customs service, has begun an investigation of the registry of three vessels classed as American. If they are found to be American registered, it was said, they will be seized under Attorney General Daugh erty's ruling that the American ships must travel "dry'through out the world. Jno. W. Redding and Jesse Southern, good citizens of Mead ows township, were visitors here yesterday.
