v. v:i>ni:si> \y. .jink 22. 102: ' jiresh Air Needed f l»y Tobacco Roots Ualeigh. June 18.—Tobacco is a fresh ail' devotee ami even its roots lik«> to have a plentiful supply of the life giving oxygen. "Waterlogged rootlets mean pour quality of tobacco," says E. V. Floyd, tobacco extension specialist at State College. "That is why we advocate thv ridge system of cultivating the crop. Farmers who use this method along with proper soil, good fertilization and care of the crop always produce a bet ter quality of tobacco than the man who does not. We have found that a continuous sup ply of air circulating in the soil throughout tin- growing seksoii is essential to the well -UHriy of tlii' crop. To secure such circulation il>e middle furrow between the rows must be kept open and below the leyl of the root system." Mr. Floyd states that when the water-level in the soil is near the surface of the ground, the ridge used should be thrown up rather than the usual two-furrow ridge. The rows should be run so as to carry off all surplus water and other diai iagc j.*\ided in the low places. This method of cultivation has been explained graphically by Mr. Floyd in extension fold er No. 27 recently issued by the extension service of Sla*e College. Drawings have been showing the method of culti vation. step by step, and the implements to use in such ctßhivation. Copies of the folder are now available and those who wish to have a copy may secure it by waiting the agricultural editor at State College. Paris Revives War On Kissing Medical science's old old war on the kiss is being re newed. The learned gentlemen trying to educate the public admit they haven't much hope of great success but they are easing their consciences by is suing their warnings. iThey paint again the pic tures of bad microbes and tell mournfully of the great dang er when lips meet lips. They suggest handshaking as a nice, substitute. The French, however, it is admitted, are bound by tradi tion to do a wonderful lot of kissing, fortunately, more of ten on the cheek—or on both cheeks—than on the mouth. The double cheek-kiss figures in many public ceremonies. The duty isn't always pleasant, for generals and cabinet ministers often find it their duty to em brace, florid, bewhiskered men hut occasionally a handsome young woman gets into the pic ture and the cabinet minister, on occasion, supplements the conventional "accolade" on both cheeks by an enthusiastic lip-to-lip performance. "Then if ever come perfect days," sang the poet of June. This year they are to come if *e have 'em.—Nashville Ban ner. ICE Buy our Ice through your local store or Ice Dealer.
