WEDNESDAY, SEPT. 24, 1930 I A SERMON! •0 REV. F. E. HAIM'SKIEI.I). LOVING ALL NATIONS AS CHRIST LOVES THEM "Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the nanve of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: "Teaching thorn to observe all things whatsoever I have command i*d you: and, 10, I am with you al ways. even unto the end of the world." —Matthew 28.19, 20. Summary of Former Install ments of the Sermon.— From the •descriptions of progress in foreign missionary work with the resultant good accomplished, given us by our Christian Missionaries and by other Americans, and from editorials in the native foreign press and from other foreign sources, we know that modern foreign missions are greatly extending our lord's King dom. And what better do we want than the divine sanction of modern foreign missions found in the words of Jesus? "By their fruits shall ye know them." However, we must continue to support foreign missions. For years to come in present fields, be cause of infancy and weakness of the native church, because of heath en tradilioij- requiring time for Christianity to break, and because other nations are depending in America to be the world's evangeliz ing servant. In the regions y.'t untouched, because Christ calls us into the fields white unto the har vest," and because Americans should show real thanks for what the Gos pel has done for them. Again, the horrors and death of heathenism should stir the souls of those who call themselves Chris tians. Illustrations how that fore ign fields are more needy than our own. Is the Christian's disposition in harmony with God's purpose tor all men? Is your's like Cain's dis position? Or like Christ's? A passenger airplane full of wealthy northern peo ple passes over a dense forest in the mountains of Nortth Carolina. One of the passen gers with field glass beholds a terrible sight in a clearing. A group of small children are playing in the midst of several large rattle-snakes. One of the children is poking a stick at a fearful monster in coil ready to strike. The passenger with the glass says to the other travellers: "These mountain whites are sorry people. It is terrible for innocent children to be allowed to play with snakes. But it is none of my affair." The others agreed the same, and they said, "It is none of our affair. We will not both er about the rescue of these children. We must not break into our ride, for we are due back home in time for the Monday morning's business. We have more children in the slums of New York than we can care for." So the plane roars on, and the endangered children are forgotten. What think you *>f these indifferent people? Would heroic and no ble humanity leave children to the agon ids of snakes.' Bui are we different from these passengers, when we close our hearts and minds to the heath en wrapped in the coils of sin and death, whether they be in our neighborhood or across the sea? Does t'.ie teaching '.'l Jesus indicate thai geography puts a limit on miss, senary en deavor? It is eerta'-i lh.it geograph ical distance v.ouh: not cool our indignation a rainst distant .peo ple allowing our children to die THE DANBURY REPORTER in torture when help would have been so easy. Yes, it would be absolutely fair for us to be righteously and passion ately indignant. But let us see if the Golden "Rule applies here. When we neglect the unfortun ate who live far away, have they also the right to feel that we are cruel and selfish? Doe-; Christ? Does not the Golden Rule work both ways? Now just one more case, giv en us by another minister. This also i.s a fictitious narative. It was at the Lord's Supper in a church where they pads the sacraments thru the pews. A large congregation was pres ent. The rule was for the man at the end of the pew to par take himself, and then pass it along to the next, and so on until the last person was reach ed. One man, in the middle of the pew, got hold of it and par took and then held on to cup. "Pass it on," said the man next to him. b-it he would not. do it. "Pass it on," said the next man beyond who wanted it, but he held to the cup. "Pass it on,' you a»*e keeping it from others." said the deacon in a low but earnest voice, but the man grasped it itin tight ly. The pastor saw that there was some trouble in thrt pew. He slipped down to it. on tip-toe and seeing the situation, he said, "Pass it on; the cup is intended for all; 'drink ve all of it.' It is not intended for you alone. It has come all the way down the table till it reached you. Don't stop it; pass it along.' But the man clutched all the harder anil would not pass the cup on. He wanted to keep it all for him self. There is the Cup of Salva vation. Christ tilled it with his own hands. He gave it to his disciples to drink. Drink and pass it along. "Freely ye have received, freely give." "Ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea. and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost parts of the earth." "Go ye, therefore." So the Apostles partook ami then passed the Cup on. VIRGINIA, j passed it on to Ephesus, Cor | inth and Phillippi; and they of j Ephesus, Corinth, and Philippi, | passed it on to Rome; and they of Rome parsed it on to Brit-! ain, where your ancestors and . mine came frcm; and they of j Britain passed it on to us in America; and we of America are to pass it on to Japan and China and Manchuria and coun tries of Europe, and to Brazil, Mexico, Africa, Cuba, and to regions in our own land inhabi • j ted by foreigners and neglected Americans, and to all other lands. j But lam ashamed to say j that there are some souls in ! cur churches who have the clip of Salvation and hold on to it, i and they will not pass it on. "It i.s good," they say; "salva | ton is so great to me—most j blessed." But those dear souls ! will not pass it on. The heath j ens are perishing for want of I the Cup, but Christians will J not pass it on. There is more salvation in the Cup than they can ever use themselves, but they will not pass any of it along. When the church, feel ing constrained to spread the blessing, calls for them to join j in the good work, saving, "Let l us pass it on to the millions of Chainamen and Mexicans," they say, "No, we do not be lieve in passing the Cup along." So they never give anything to save other people. Is it right? Is it the way and will of Christ? I am in great with j the cry, "We need missions 'at home. Our i.ation i.' full of | corruption." What can we do j to remedy this condition.' When we have faith enough to obey our Lord to the utmost, believ ing that he is wiih us even to the end of the noil 1. multip'ied blessing comes back to us in return.
