PAGE TWO Wheat Acreage I; In Increase B. J. Kirby Gives Points on Corn Substitute and Winter ! Hay Crops—Wheat Growers to Elect Officers. The federal wheat acreage ad justment work probably will af fect increase production of the crop in Stokes. The outcome ot this work can hardly he antici pated at the persent but it is, litedless to say that it will af fect some farmers one way and t others in other ways. Farmers wln.se average and production in the base of 1930. 1931. and 19:'.2 were higher than necessary to provide their farm needs have taken advant age of the cash offer made by the Gov. for reduction. More than twenty of the county's; leading wheat farmers have Til ed applications f r c ntraei.-j agreeing to make the re pumr fifteen per cent ieduction in! their acreage and pr« -Action . during the next two years, j These ir. n will veeivo t:• i.ieii . 1933 (■ o a: r >.:m:-.tt J cents ] • T-k 1 nl: ■ eg.tivu- ; hut « f '• ; • « i the ir ; ' -A iil d.wli)g the i; ••• i> d. Wheat Growers to Elect Officers. Wheat growers who signed applications for contracts are to meet in Danbury on Satur day October 21 at 10:00 A. M. In this meeting the growers will elect a county committee and a director for the District Wheat Production Control Hoard. This committee will have charge of this work in Stokes during the next two years. Barley A Substitute for Corn. The Stokes corn crop is short this year. The unfavorable sea son has reduced the yield of the upland corn. In many sections of the state hooded barley has become a popular substitute for corn. It is claimed by many far mers that land which will p.ro duce thirty bushels of corn per acre will produce forty bushels of barley and that barley is more easily produced than corn. Barley requires only seeding and harvesting. Corn requires this and in addition it requires -ultivation. The yields of either crop are increased by fertilizer ■pplicati r.s and barley responds ! -\-i ii to the use of lime. Barky should be seeded ear ly in the fall at the rate of two bushels per acre. This is 1 crop | with which it pays to u e good seed, preferably certified seed. Winter Hav Crops, winter hay crops prove pop ular in many sections. Inqnir ies made here show Cat the : met ice of growing these is not ;uv!l i tabiisl.ed localiv. In pro ducing winter hay crops a mix ..ire ( f small grain, and k-gu nies is used. A good mixture is made as follows: wheat., two pecks, hooded barley, one bush el, • ats. 1 bushel, Abruzzi rye. one peck, Harry vetch, twenty pounds and crimson clever, ten pounds. These rates are for the acre. This mixture is usually mown l'or hay as soon its the grains are in the dough stage. Consid erable winter grazing and heavy yields i f hay have been s-cur. 1 with this mixture un der c nditiens not more favor able than these found here. Men who anticipate a shortage ot hay n >:t spring v/iii tind it to their interest t i .-. id th above mixtui e this fall. Holier inoculum the legume seed. X. J. Kirby, T- Mi' ■ i*; •*. Agr. At.
