THE DANBURY REPORTER. Established 1872. Volume 62. ! AN EDITORIAL, i FEDERAL DISCRIMINATION AGAINST NORTH CAROLINA AMAZING FACTS FOR THE PEOPLE TO DIGEST. What's the matter with North Carolina, and where are our Senator? and Congressmen that they sit supine and indifferent while the colossal hand-outs at Washington are seriously, almost grotesquely discriminatory to North Carolina? Is North Carolina a red headed step-child in the family of States that we who pay more money into the Federal treasury than any other State except one—that we whose suffering- during- the depression has been as heart-breaking- as that of any other people—that we who have done so much and are doing so much to hold up the hands of the government in the hour of its most crucial tests—should be the least favored among all the States? Where is the pride, the glory, the patriotism, the justice of our great and loved State? Wherefore the meekness, the den sity. the apathy, the unselfishness, the innocence that make us the easy mark for those who ''will take if you will." Napoleon said Providence is on the side of the heaviest artillery. READ AND PONDER THESE AMAZING FACTS WHICH ARE OF RECORD AND CANNOT BE DISPUTED: UNDER THE FERA: South Dakota gets 22 million dollars. North Carolina gets 16 million dollars; South Dakota pays federal taxes of $1,331.00?. North Carolina pays federal taxes of .$260,405,901. The comparison would be ridiculous if it were not so pitiful for the North Carolina poor and unemployed. Now listen further: Under the FERA Texas receives 36 millions, while only paying into the Federal treasury 60 millions. The showing is with practically every other State as compared with North Carolina, alike shamefully discriminatory to us. Now Listen Again: From all the different government ivtief or loan agencies, the-FERA, the HOLC, the AAA, the PWA, etc., North Carolina's totat grant is 111 million dollars. The grants to some other States are as follows: Texas, 467 millions; California, 361 millions; Georgia, 135 millions; lowa. 176 millions; Illinois. 337 millions; Indiana, 161 millions; Massachusetts. 170 millions; Michigan, 242 millions; Minnesota. 197 millions; New York, 614 millions; Wisconsin, 191 millions, etc., and so on. UNDER THE GREAT PWA California gets 77 millions; Texas, S6 millions; New York, 194 millions, New Jersey, 53 millions, North Carolina, 24 million-. UNDER THE HOLC California is granted 73 millions; Connecticut, 35 millions; Texas, 70 millions; Wisconsin, 67 millions; Ohio, 173 millions; New York, 243 millions; Illinois, 78 millions; New Jersey, 112 millions, North Carolina millions. WHAT SOME STATES PAY INTO FEDERAL TREASURY IN TAXES New Jersey, 99 millions; California, 151 millions; Ohio, 124 millions; Texas, 60 millions; Wisconsin, 43 millions; North Caro lina, 280 millions, VASTLY MORE THAN ANY OTHER STATE EXCEPT ONE —NEW YORK. WHAT THE CITIZENS OF SOME STATES RECEIVE PER PERSON: Nevada, 8200.19; Arizona, $107.85; Idaho, $133.38; North Dakota. $175.00; North Carolina, $34.52 LOWEST OF ANY OTHER STATE, EXCEPT ONE. BUT THE NORTH CAROLINA CITIZEN PAYS MORE THAN ANY OTHER CITIZEN The citizens of North Carolina pay into the Federal Treasury per person $80.27, the highest payment of any State in the Union, not even excepting New York which only pays $4-3.88 per person. AND GETS BACK LESS Coming back, the citizens each of North Carolina receive from all the government agencies for relief, loans, farm adjust ments, etc., 834.52, while the New York citizens receive per person $50.11. THE UNDYING SHAME OF NORTH CAROLINA: North Carolina's per person share is the lowest of any State in the Union except one. Is this treatment of North Carolinians fair and just or is our deplorable position the result of stupidity and indifference on the part of those who should have GUTS to demand at least a proportionate share of the more than Eight Billions of Cash Being- Dispensed under the New Deal. Where is there any semblance of justice in the bestowal of 466 million dollars of assistance to Texas against North Caro lina's 111 millions, when Texas pays into the Federal treasury 60 millions against our 260 millions, and when North Carolina's industrial, agricultural and financial sorrows have been the equal of Texas' and when our poor and unemployed have suffered no less than theirs; or why should California receive 76 millions under the PWA against our 24 millions, when California pays 151 millions Federal taxes against our 260 millions, and since California has suffered tremendously less from the depression than North Carolina? Is North Carolina with its glorious traditions of patriotism, its "first at Bethel and last at Appomattox." its brilliant record in State and National history—after all only a big stupid jellyfish—an inert mass of inferiority-complex that is too weak and too fearsome to demand its rights? WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO ABOUT IT? No other newspaper in North Carolina has published the above startling facts, and the Danbury Reporter respectfully sub mits them to the sober consideration of the citizens of the State. Danbury, N. C., Thursday, December 6, 1934 Number 3,048
