Page 2 THE DANBURY REPORTER. N. E. PEPPER, Editor and Publisher Issued Wednesdays at Danbury, N. C., and entered at the Danbury postoffice as second class matter, under act of Congress. Danbury, N. C., Thursday, March 26, 1936 Illinois-Minded In his spectacular campaign for Governor by showing that the State government of North Carolina is both incompetent and corrupt, Dr. McDonald insults the intelligence of a great majority of North Carolinians who have been believing that the opposite was true. At the same time this young professor be trays a stupendous conceit in his attitude that nobody knew anything about it till he came here from his native State of Illinois to tell us about it. But his conceit is about equalled by his pre sumption in expecting the North Carolina school teachers, to whom now he is making a special appeal, to follow him and support him in his slanderous animadversions on the good and honest name of the North Carolina that is giv ing them employment, and whose pay checks would doubtless be smaller but for the saving grace of the tax which he so assiduously abuses. We can only explain the doctor's wild obsession that North Carolina has gone crooked on the theory that he is Illinois-minded. Out in that western country where he is a native, rascality and graft in public places is said to be often the rule rather than the exception. It may be a great pity if by the smashing of the slot machines, our Sunday gamblers are driven back to their poker, which is so much more expensive. In a New York supreme court the very in teresting question has arisen as to how a plain tiff can recover property which he did not own. There are various ways of producing evidence in court to convince a jury that you did possess a thing when you didn't, but your own sworn admission in a tax return sheet is not one of them. President Roosevelt's plan to pay the farmer $45 per acre for all the land the farmer puts in soil-improving crops from his "base acreage," is not so bad. Then if the tobacco States can get together on a "control" agreement, you have another trick turned. It is a beautiful trick for the farmers—this thing of getting paid for their labor and their crops at a profit. It is noted in the papers that the populations of England and France show a decline. But the birth rate in the United States is well above the death rate. Those who read in the Dan bury Reporter's King correspondence every week the report of births in Yadkin township, Stokes county, can easily understand why , America will soon have 130 million population. The average non-resident physician must view the obstetric field of Stone and Helsabeck with consuming envy. ' The merchant who cusses the sales tax while wrapping up your 10-cent purchase for which , you paid 11 cents, is not convtvng a subtle hint to you to vote for Dr. McDonr.M for governor. He is only throwing out a smoke screen to keep you from seeing the 7 cents clear profit he is ' gouging the State for every time he sells a dollars worth. You don't h Kress, Wool- * worth and other big chain stores sayirg any thing. They sell many 10-CCIK article:.; every ( day. They are not interested in politic... Only in making money. Watch Out, Fishermen Charles Martin, game protector, for Stokes county, issues this t pronunciament: The law sayi no fishing of any kind whatso ever from April Ito May 10. This is to give the fish time and opportunity to propagate, in crease and multiply, ana re plenish, you see. Also it is a violation of law to hunt foxes any time without license. This law is some dis / ecu.. 0 *'j . chickens, which if tlicy euu' 1 ..-on, wouH , probably voU' to luivo the fox ! law repealed so everybody could kill all the foxes they wanted to ijny time.
