Volume 66 Miss Sandy Ridge Elected Saturday Night The sandy Ridge Beauty con test ended Saturday night with the election of Visa Madeline Hfcrtin as "Miss Sandy Ridge." ggtd the most beautiful girl of tlfet school district. Martin, who received 27,- 000 votes from her admiring friends, is a member of the Sandy r Ridge high school faculty, where has held the position as teacher of home economics for several years. She is n oted for her grace and charm, a n d her amiability of disposition which wins for her universal popularity. Other candidates who received qriendid votes were as follows: Opal Kington, Willie Hall, Norma Boyles, Ruth Joyce, Vera Carter, Lelia Venable, Ruby ! Rolman and Ruth Williams. As "Miss Sandy Ridge," Mis 3 Martin will be a strong contest ant in the coming selection of "Miss Stokes County" at the com pletion of the senes of high school beauty contests now being spon sored by the Dbnbury Reporter. The Sandy Ridge affair was quite a success, more than 500 people being in attendance. The beauty show was preceded by a very interesting program of ad * dresses, music, dahdng,' ritunts, etc. County Agent J. P. Brown made a talk on the new farm pro gram, while A. J. Ellington, Stokes representative of the Win eton-Salem Production Credit As sociation, explained the workings, of that very valuable adjunct of the federal lending agencies. Both of these numbers received the closest attention from the audience. Several selections were sung by Miss Ruth Patterson, accompanied by Mrs. J. W. Hall on the piano. These were heartly enjoyed and repeatedy encored. Miss Patter son is noted throughout the State for her vocal gifts a»»d fecoom •plishmentfl. v Austin Gamer of the school faculty afforded entertainment and amusement by his jokes and dancing. A number of the high school girls, also little Miss Virginia Joyce of Danbury, rendered fancy dancing which brought down the house. The Reporter management is Indebted to Pitaf. E. M Macon, Mr*. Rosa Hutcherson, Mr. and K 'Mrs. Chas. Eaton and others for their lasdistlances in making the affair a pronounced success. Thanks are also due to Tom New, Jr., apd hia King Merry makers for their splendid music. The school realized a nice sum tor its trouble and co-operation while the Reporter's subscription list was swelled by a comfortable v number of new subscribers. Miss Jenkins is bringing to j Stpkes county Miss Sallie Brooks, ! assistant extension specialist in I foods anutrition, who will give some special demonstrations on bread making. Miss Brooks will | demonstrate the making 0 f liquid, I yeast and the various types of! yeast rolls at two meetings this i week. The first bread demonstration' will be given at the King Club 1 [ House Thursday afternoon, March ; 3 at two o'clock. Jobs Aavailable Under WPA In Stokes County An unlimited number of jobs under the WPA are available now in Stokes county. This work will include county-wide road projects, as well as privy building employ ment. Pell, of Westfield, Stokes county, who has been a life-long Republican, announces that hence-J forth he will affiliate with and support the Democratic party. | Mr. Pell was in Danbury today. He r.tated that his reasons for changing his political attitude is ! I that he believes the Democifatic; party is the progressive party of j i the nntion and State, that it is j | honestly a n d conscientiously bat tling for the interests of the farmer and the common man, and that in the policies and principles as advocated by President Roose velt lie the hope of the nation Mr. Pell says that in departing from the Republican party, in which he has long affiliated, and in which he has so many true friends, that he is doing what his conscience tells him is best for his country. He adds that he is not actuated in his decision by any hope or aspiration for office, that he is not a candidate for, or wfents any political office. Bootleggers in Limbo. Arrested by Deputy Sheriff Everett Wagoner, Beraie Cook and Maggie Goodman are in jail. They were caught with 25 gf lons. The pair were run from a point near Reynold* school to Pilot Mt. before being omitaks by the officer. FRANCISCO BEAUTY CONTEST TO BE HELD THE NIGHT OF MARCH 12 PROGRAM TO BE PUBLISHED NEXT WEEK. Francisco high school has been selected as the next point to hold a beauty show in continuation of the series of beauty contests be ing sponsored at the high schools of Stokes county by the Dan- 1 bury Reporter. 1 The night of March 12, at 7:30 1 P. M , an interesting prograi: will be rendered at the Francisco school, consisting of addresses, music, recitations, jokes and fui. Stokes Gets WPA Allotment Among the allocations of WPA allotments in the State, announced from Raleigh this week, is the following: Stokes county, $3,385 for school lunches. J. W. Henry Brown, Sandy Ridge young ma", aged 37, died i n a Leaksville hospital Friday morn ing from injuries received in a fight at his brother's O. T. Brown's, filling station two or three miles north of Sandy Ridge, Thursday night. John Richardson, aged 25, and Jamie Richardson, aged 16, his brother, are in Danbury jail to await heai'ing charged with the death of Brown. These mer. were arrested by Stokes officers soon after the killing. The Richardsons —so it is re ported to officers —got into a general row with several people at the filling station, during which rocks were thrown. The Richard sons are charged with throwing rocks into the filling station, af ter which Brqwn was found lying unconscious on the floo'> Fred Amos, J io. Wils n and Jno Joyce are reported involved in the fracas A hearing will probably be held at Danbury this week. i Emergency Crop Loans Available At Danbury Or Walnut Cove For the information of the farmers of Stokes county who desire to make applications for Emergency Crop Leans, generally known as seed loans, lor 19.18, G. H. Alford, Field Supervisor for Stokes county, announces that applications are being written in D.anbury by Mr. T. D. Martin, his office being upstairs in the old MSartin store building; also ap« plications are being written in Walnut Cove by Mrs. Gladys W. McPherson at her insurance of fice in that city. Officers Active. Monday Qarl Ray and Mack Wall, Stokes deputies, captured a still and several barrels of beer nete r Walnut Cove. No arrests were made. Later Everett Wag oner and Carl Ray wrested a 'nan by the name of Mabe and another named Martin, both of Forsyth. They were found near a still in the Dry Hollow section where a still and a Quantity of beer and sugar-head were taken. Death of J. E. Alcorn. J. E. Alcorn, a«ed 78, died at Dillard last week. s. P.
