Two WPA Projects now in op eration in the county. WP No. 1278, located at Sandy Ridge. I This project is quarrying airJ crushing stone to bo used on sec- j ondary farm to market roads. This project is furnishing work for 37 men in the county and is superintended by J. Reid Jones,, WPA cooperating with the State : Highway and Public Works Corn- j mission. WP No. 4549 is a county-wide school ground improvement pro ject operating at Walnut Cove High School. Putting in drain age, leveling and grading grounds. Improvement to two tennis courts and other general ground improvement giving em ployment to 17 workers. Super intendended by J. B. Easter for! the WPA coordinating with J. C.' Carson, Superintendent of Schoois for Stokes county. WP No. 3942, Domestic Science Building at King high school has J just been completed. This pro ject furnished work for around 20 men for the past 4 months. The work being superintended by Dennis H. Alley for WPA and sponsored by J. C. Carson, Su perintendent of Stokes County Schools. WP No. 4179, Brick School Building constructed at Haw Pond ha 3 just been completed and will be of great benefit to the surrounding community. This work was superintended by J. B. Easter for WPA and sponsored by J. C. Carson, Superintendent of Stokes County Schools, fur nishing employment to approxi mately 17 men over a period of two months. WP No. 3476 Gymnasium at Sandy Ridge school completed re cently. This building is of wooden structure and is quite an added improvement to the Sandy JRidge school system. This project .em ployed around 30 men over a period of 5 months. Construc tion work superintended by J. B. Easter and sponsored by* Super intendent of Stokes County Schools J C. Carson. WP No. 33t63 addition to Pine Hall School, brick structure. Su perintended by Dennis H. Alley and sponsored bj J. C. Carson, Superintendent of Schools. Add ing much value to the Pine Hall school system. WP No. 3143, Malarial Control located at Walnut Cove. This work consisted of incidental drainage work on and around Town Fork Creek. This project operated for approximately 7 months furnishing work to around 30 men. Superintended by S. P. Christian, sponsored by the State Board of Health and The Town of Walnut Oove. Recently the relief rolls in Stokes county have been greatly reduced by reason of workers go ing "back to their farm duties. Several buildings and improve ment projects throughout the county are now being planned and work will probably start in the near future. The hearty co operation received from the spon sors at all times has been benefi cial in making this program a success. All workers used on the above projects come to us through the channels of the County Welfare Department being certified by Miss Ella Downing, Superinten dent of Public Welfare of Stokes County. Church sponsored the bas ket ball game at Sandy Ridge gymnasium, a large crowd attend ing. There is another game for April 28. The barefoot men's team will play the high school boys. CARL RAY NEW ROAD COP POPULAR WALNUT COVE OF FICER RECEIVES APPOINT MENT AS WHOLE - TIME DEPUTY—TO TAKE EFFECT JULY J. Carl Ray, of Walnut Cove, will be a whole-lime deputy in Stoke-s eouiry after July 1. He was ap pointed last week by the Stokes' county commissioners in accord-1 ancc with the provision of the re cent act of the legislature estab lishing this position. The salary of the office will b»' ' SI,OOO per year and the officer will be furnished with a new auto-' mobile by the county and allow- j ed 5 cents mileage. Carl Ray has for a number of years been a very efficient deputy sheriff under Sheriff John Tay lor. His duties in his new capa city wil! still be under the super vision of the Sheriff. He will be employed on a monthly basis. Mr. Ray is well known to be an officer of conservative judg ment. His duties will lead him over all sections of the county in the enforcement of law and or der. King Woman's Club Meets On Thrrsday night, April 13,' at 7:30, the Woman's Club of King met with 26 members and Lwo visitors present. During the business session, two dele gates, Mrs. J. F. Brown and Mrs. Stone, were elected to represent the club at the State convention in Raleigh. The president, Mrs. C. R. Carroll, appointed Mrs. R. W. Boles and Mrs. C. T. McGc is alternates. Much business was transacted. Three new members, Miss E.loise Boise, Miss Ester Key a>id Miss Wilma Rat lodge were unan imously voted into the club. The program was in charge of :he Garden Department. Mrs. J. F\ Brown gave a very interesting 2nd instructive talk on Soil and Fertilizer. She told the club how to prepare the soil for different flowers and shrubs, how to plant and transplant different shrubs. Mrs. G. E. Stone spoke on Gar den Arithmetic. She also gave a very interesting and instructive talk on how to divide bulbs and plants and how to prune shrubs and flowers. Mrs. J. C. Carson, Jr., Mrs. I. A. Booe and Miss Amy Moore were hostesses. Mrs. Medley Covington had an accident to her car at Madison last week, sufficient to make it. desirable to trade her vehicle for a new one. She was on her way to her home here from a visit with her friend Mrs. "Red" Michael at Ferram, Va., when the wreck occurred. The woods are rapidly getting green. The 10th of May is un derstood to be the date when the leaves get full grown, and that is 20 days. They'll have to hustle, wont they?
